Excellent introduction to the framework

I like Sencha and recognize how powerful of a tool it is, but it's not the easiest to learn if it's your first javascript framework. A lot about the documentation provided by Sencha directly seems to assume that the reader is already familiar with Sencha or a similar javascript framework.

Sencha Ext JS Bootcamp in a Book filled the gap of introduction-to-the-framework very well for me. There's still a bit you need to know before diving into the book (general javascript usage, general OOP concepts, some command line usage), but as far as Sencha itself the book does a fantastic job of getting you up and running. It answers a lot of the questions that the official documentation and tutorials left me with.

Definitely worth the purchase.

Training Class in a Book for Sure

First off, this book is a bargain. I first balked at the $99 price tag for a book, but this really isn't a typical book, it is truly a class in book form. I believe it is the same book FigLeaf would include with their training course. If you can learn by reading a book, this would be the best ExtJS book out there. Therefore, considering a training class would be $2000 or more, this book has real value.

I've read and skimmed a few other ExtJS books and none are as in-depth as this book. It is primarily useful to beginners, but even if you've been working with ExtJS it probably has value in filling in the gaps of knowledge (I've used ExtJS for a couple of years and found it informational). The author walks you through creating an application through "lecture" then labs. This includes using Sencha Cmd and a vast majority of the ExtJS framework, theming, as well as setting up you environment.

I wished that an ExtJS 6 version was available, but really the main thing missing would be the new Fashion theming and 'modern' i.e. Sencha Touch components. Otherwise, this book covers everything you'd need for creating MVVM apps for desktop browsers in ExtJS 6.

Complete tutorial on Ext JS 5

I needed to come up to speed quickly with Sencha's Ext JS, and the resources out there were pretty slim. This book is a complete workshop, and I found it to be invaluable.

Sencha has moved on to Ext JS 6, but I was able to use the knowledge I gained here, working with Ext JS 5 to get me over the learning curve, and upgrading was easy after that. I do recommend using the same version of the tools as the book uses. If you try to use it directly with v6, you might have a few challenges, as regards file locations within projects. But the bulk of it will still be great knowledge.

Extremly expensive for what can provide. The quality of images is very low (and all the book's images are b&w and small, which makes difficult for the reader understand a 2D resistivity profile), the references are weak and have tables out of date and which wrong concepts! It has some interesting subjects but don't recomend purchasing it.

You'll be reading this "Long After Midnight"

Don't have this collection of Ray Bradbury in your library??? Oh my, what you are missing. Each & every story in this book takes you somewhere interesting. I suggest reading, then digesting the story before moving onto the next. You will be sure to want more & more of Ray Bradbury, also the author of "Something Wicked This Way Comes" that was made into a wonderful movie.

A classic collection

Ray Bradbury's classic collection, Long After Midnight, gets a special treatment from PS Publishing.

Long After Midnight is a well-known collection to Bradbury fans (and other readers), because it was first published in 1976. It was nominated for a World Fantasy Award. I think it's great that PS Publishing has decided to publish it again, because this edition contains beautiful black and white drawings. I'm sure that they'll please Bradbury fans.

The cover art (The Witches' Sabbath by Francisco de Goya) looks very good. It's a beautiful painting.

Long After Midnight is an excellent collection of Ray Bradbury's stories. He's a storyteller, who entertains his readers with different kind of stories. In my opinion this collection contains many of his best stories. I think it could be said that Long After Midnight is like a treasure trove of different kind of literary pearls.

If you're a Bradbury fan, you'll love this illustrated collection. If you haven't read Bradbury, but you're thinking of reading his novels and stories, this collection is a good place to start, because these stories are interesting.

Treasures of imagination and wonder

I must preface this review by stating that I have not read this edition but the original paperback Bantam publication from 1976. Assuming that the contents are the same, I will proceed thusly. . .
This collection of 22 short pieces might prove something of a puzzle for anybody picking it up based on Bradbury's reputation as a science fiction writer. To be sure, there are stories here that fit neatly into that genre due to subject matter (robots, time travel) or setting (Mars) but Bradbury is really not a science fiction writer so much as a storyteller. This is a distinction that seems to be much more clear today than it was back in 1976 when Bradbury seemed to be stuck with the Sci-Fi type despite stories such as those found in "Long After Midnight", which are closer to literary than genre fiction even when employing science fiction devices.
Perhaps a good example of the latter would be "The Messiah". This story simply yet profoundly examines the nature of religious faith via the characters of a missionary priest on Mars and a telepathic, shape changing Martian.
Other pieces defy any easy classification and stand alone as simple revelations of the human condition and the mysteries of life. "Getting Through Sunday Somehow" is such a one. Bradbury's gift for poetic nostalgia is used to brilliant effect here as an American writer in Dublin, facing a gray wall of ennui, is transformed and made aware of his blessings through a bar room philosopher and a street side harp player.
Bradbury, with his seemingly boundless imagination and gift for transcribing the visions of that imagination, is a treasure and these stories are literary jewels shining dark and light.

Well-Written, Great Alpha/Beta/Omega Romance

This second book was infinitely better than the first, coming a lot closer to the trademark Lia Cooper magic. ;) The politics and plot were skilfully woven in with the romance, with both being interesting and well done.

This book had editing errors, like the first, although not as many. The author clearly needs better beta [ha! pun!] readers.

And of course, we finally get to see the alpha/omega dynamics in full play. I kind of almost wish we had seen it before now, not necessarily w/the main chars, but to see it influence their culture more strongly than just "alphas are aggressive and omegas the thinkers." Like I wish we had seen someone go into heat before now, so we know how things play out.

Overall I'm much happier with this book than the first, and am excited to read the third.

Not as good as the first, but..

The first book in this series, The Omega Prince, was wonderful. Unfortunately Lia had a hiatus in her writing of this book. This resulted in her mentally moving on to the next book, The Honorable Beta, and to some extent changing the personality of certain characters. The effect is somewhat choppy on the plot. However, if you continue the series, you should read this book, or you will miss things. The Honorable Beta,the next one is much more up to Lia's usual standards. There are a few "edit by spellcheck" errors, but except for the replacement of "heeling" with "healing" when referring to riding a horse, it does not really interrupt the flow of the story.

Could Be Better

I read books 1-4 back to back so these comments apply to all
This is a series and must be read in order. None of the books end with a resolution but there are no cliffhangers; they just stop, to be picked up in the next release. I love the characters and storyline but the proofing is non-existent and it's bad enough to detract from the story, wrong words, missing words, nonsensical sentences. It's painful to read a great story that's written with such carelessness but I'll keep reading as new installments come out because the story is that good.

This should have been called "Mundane Statements for Minecrafters".

Please, if you're a parent or adult looking to buy something for a loved child in your life, DO NOT BUY THIS!

First, this joke book contains no jokes. No puns, no play on words, no irony, no nothing that could be objectively be called humor. The book reads more like an instruction manual.

For example (this is actually in the "joke" book):
What happened to the player who encountered two creepers?
He was destroyed!

That "joke" is just like all the rest. It sets up an event, and then tells you the most likely conclusion to that event. If you were reading that as an instruction manual you could figure out that "creepers" probably explode or are very dangerous. So, if you want a round-about way of learning the game mechanics, by all means, get this book.

To end I'll post a couple more "jokes" to prove my point:

Did you hear about the player that tried to put a saddle on a creeper?
He went boom!
(For some reason "He went" was in italics and "boom" was not. Not sure what that's supposed to mean)

Did you hear about the player who was killed by a skeleton?
He respawned!
("Respawning" just means you end back up at your bed after you die in game. So in other words this "joke" says "What happened when the player died? The same thing that happens every other time you die!)

Great way to humanely torture your friends

I bought it part out of irony, and part to torture my friends. Works pretty well on both ends. If there's an awkward silence while we're skyping or something, I like to pull it out, flip to a random page and make things even more awkward, but much louder as we all half laugh and grown in disgust and confusion.

Miss Merry

The li'l goon dance, her quirky habit of eating spaghetti without the sauce, her love/hate relationship with her older sister Marjorie (just like real siblings), dodging dad's alligator leg chomps, hiding under tables, all character moments of 8-year-old Merry that make her one of the best drawn characters I've ever read. That's the good stuff, the stuff beneath the plot, it's the scene at the dinner table between Roy Scheider and his son in JAWS. What's more, when Merry goes through the worst, you care what happens to her, feel sympathy for her, a testament to Mr Tremblay's skill at writing such rich characters.

Oh, 'What about the scary stuff?' you ask. Sure. There's plenty of that. I won't give too much away, but one of the scenes involves Merry's cardboard playhouse and a blanket that'll make you feel like a child with bedtime fears again as you read it. One of the scariest scenes written by any author in the last 30 years.

After turning the final page, I am more than aware of why there’s so much buzz about Paul Tremblay, why movie studios were in a heated auction for this book. A HEAD FULL OF GHOSTS will change the game.

Uneven

I'm not quite sure why I didn't have a better reaction to this one. The mechanics of the writing are good, and any story that acknowledges that "demonic possession" is just how ignorant people say "mental illness" deserves some love.

It just never drew me in as thoroughly as I think it needed to in order to work. It set up the ending like a twist, yet explained it in advance. It mocked itself as a knock-off of THE EXORCIST, but then never did much beyond that. The worst part, by far, were interludes in which the main character, in blog form, explained the subtext of the story.

Man, just talking about that part makes me want to knock a star off the rating. Really, it's an uneven read, neither short enough to pack the punch it wants to, nor long enough to plumb the depths it needs to.

The advance praise I've seen from a number of authors I admire and respect made me doubt A Head Full of Ghosts could be as good as they were saying. Well, after reading the book myself, I'm no longer a doubter.

Paul Tremblay's new release could quite possibly be the perfect book. Best-selling author Rachel Neville plans to write the true story of "The Possession," a reality show that aired on The Discovery Channel a number of years ago.

She's managed to arrange an interview with Meredith (call me Merry) Barrett who is telling her full story for the first time. It's the story of how the reality show about her sister Marjorie's "possession" came about, and how it all played out in a six-episode series on cable TV.

The relationships among the family members, although strained at times, rings true, especially that of Marjorie and little sister Merry. The childhood memories were absolutely charming.

Skillfully written and very believable with some wonderful "Oh, WOW" moments A Head Full of Ghosts is not at all what I expected, and for that reason and many others, it's a so much better novel.

Available in hardcover, e-book, and audio editions, A Head Full of Ghosts is a must read for all horror fans.
