About the Author
A. Michael Huberman’s long-term interests were in scientific epistemology and adult cognition and knowledge use. His work focused on education policy, school reform, and the practical translation of research knowledge into effective school practice. His first extensive project was a four-year study of an experimental elementary school’s implementation of Piagetian theories into classroom practice..

Matthew B. Miles, a social psychologist, had a career-long interest in strategies for educational reform. His work focused on planned change in education, group and organizational studies, and the dissemination and implementation of research findings. His first major research project was a four-year study of six new, innovative public schools.

A Good Overview

Scholars interested in brushing up on analyzing qualitative date will benefit from the insights offered by Miles and Huberman. Those seeking to enter this field of inquiry will also be a primary audience for their offering. In this book they present a broad overview of the methody of analyzing data collected in qualitative research.
On the subject of presenting findings, they are to be commended for explaining the value of the use of a matrix. It is a means of clarifying data for academic audiences. Designing a matrix is an act of creativity.
In my opinion they go too far in arguing for the generalization of of results. They sound too much like quantitative researchers. Qualitative and quantitative inquirers have different objectives. There should be no reason to argue for similarities when these differences exist for good reason, i.e., the research questions are framed differently. Different results should be expected. Each method has its set of strenghts and weaknesses. That's why one method compliments the other. Generally speaking, however, this is a worthwhile book that explains what it seeks to explain in a comprehensive way.

What is Qualitative Research, and How Do I Do It?

One of the more practical guides to qualitative research - research based not on numbers and statistics but on deep, narrative studies of a particular example or case. Much qualitative research is vaguely grounded defiant theories that tell you that qualitative research isn't quantitative research - but doesn't tell you what it is. The editors of the Companion attempt to describe the latter.

Helpful essays include the following: Kathleen M. Eisenhardt's essay on building theories from the research itself, not from a preconceived theory that limits observation; Joseph A. Maxwell's and Janet Ward Schofield's essays on what constitutes validity in qualitative research (not universality or replicatibility!); Martyn Hammersley's advocation of "subtle realism;" and Norman Denzin's description of the qualitative research process. A good overview for students attempting their first qualitative research study, researchers in the field, or teachers wanting to describe to other students what this qualitative research stuff is all about.

Lessons In Industrial Safety From Around The World

People who know me well know I am a voracious reader; they also know that I have a passion for the safety field. When people ask me who my favorite author is I give them an answer none are expecting: Trevor Kletz. Dr. Kletz is perhaps the world's preeminent expert on industrial safety, particularly in the chemical processing industry. "Learning From Accidents in Industry" is another of his golden books, emphasizing both the big picture (e.g. "what you don't have, can't leak,") and attention to detail in design and operation (e.g. "slip-plate on reflux drum.") As a former production manager at a chemical production plant, I can personally attest that the commonsense approach Dr. Kletz espouses is both vital and less common than it should be.

The beauty of this book (and others by Kletz) is his brilliant use of case studies to illustrate his chief points, frequently including photographs of accidents resulting from bad practice. I particularly like the focus on inherently safer design (and especially the emphasis on reduction in inventory of hazardous intermediary reagents) as opposed to added on safety features such as relief valves and catchpots. Of course both are sometimes required even in elegant designs, but Kletz emphasizes good plant layout and process design via the safest pathways. Another thing I love about this book is the incorporation of both well-known accidents (e.g. Flixborough, Seveso, Bhopal,) as well as accidents generally unknown outside of the organization in which it occurred (e.g. an explosion in a control room in a plant that manufactured organic solvent.) Kletz rightly focuses on sharing information within industry so others can learn from smaller incidents before a major accident occurs. Aviation is an excellent example of an industry in which this sharing of safety data occurs, but Kletz points to legal ramifications which overshadow this information exchange in most industries.

In addition to his discussion of the varying legal frameworks in different countries (the US and UK are compared and contrasted in particular) Kletz discusses varying regulatory approaches used around the world. I am extremely familiar with the stifling bureaucracy of US safety and regulatory codes, and Kletz summarizes the biggest problem with the US approach in the most succinct manner possible: "In some countries, including the US, it seems to be believed that industrial accidents can be prevented by the government writing a book of regulations that looks like a telephone directory, though it is rather less interesting to read." Bravo!

If you are interested in industrial safety, I cannot recommend a better authority or more compelling author than Trevor Kletz., and I recommend this book to safety professionals in any field.

These narrow, sometimes startling perspectives give certain illustrations real depth and dimension, creating powerful visual images, while his use of dense, neutral shades underscores the drama of the soldier's journey and provides a sense of hard-edged reality. The book's overall design is not as effective as some of the individual illustrations, however. Small, extraneous drawings of toys punctuate large blocks of text and distract the eye from its primary focus on the facing page. The placement of the text is blocky and awkward, often laid on top of the illustrations in a distracting manner. Marcellino takes a more traditional approach in his illustrations. Viewers will recognize this immediately as a "fairy tale" by his use of soft, misty colors, all washed in the golden glow of candlelight. The palette is warm, and the pictures have texture and a panoramic sweep that gives substance to the wider world in which the Tin Soldier's adventures take place, enhancing the sense of the his haplessness. The illustrations are flatter, less dynamic than Lynch's, but the overall design is more effective. From title page to endpapers, careful and loving attention has been paid to balance and flow; the typeface is eye-catching and integral to the whole. Although both books are primarily showcases for the artists, the story is still important and the two are quite different. Lewis's translation is standard Andersen--wordy and slightly old-fashioned, but very readable. Seidler's text, while maintaining a strong sense of Andersen's voice, is tighter and much more direct. It reads fluidly with a verbal balance and flow that complements Marcellino's illustrations. For overall quality bookmaking, the choice would be the Marcellino, although Lynch's work is fresh and different, and has more child appeal. The Disabled Veteran

I never heard of this Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tale until my daughter viewed Fantasia 2000. However the story is much different than what is depicted on film. I bought the paperback edition yet I would prefer a hardcover to pass down to my child. The story is very tragic for the soldier and his love when both are put to the test. Many scenes appear by chance and left for the reader to fill in the blanks yet I believe this was deliberately hidden and turned into metaphor in a time when the people were censored in Europe.

This is a classic Christmas story with excellent illustrations. I bought a used copy and the seller did an excellent job to make sure I was satisfied when I mentioned that it had a little more wear and tear than I expected.

Another great read in romantic suspense

Storm brewing. Lightning. Thunder. A cloned baby?

With the first sentence, the first scene, Delores Fossen catapults the reader into Delaney Nash's world. She's afraid for her miracle baby. Is he in danger and is he the son of her sworn enemy, Ryan McCall?

`Peekaboo Baby' is a story that could become true in today's fast-paced technology and advances in science. Delaney visits Ryan on that stormy day when her doctor won't divulge anything when she tells him New Hope Clinic is under investigation for unethical practices. After that, they are involved in several near-fatal "accidents".

Before Delaney and Ryan can even think about the sexual attraction they have for each other, they have to "race against time" to figure out where the danger is coming from: the doctor, the director of the clinic, or even, Delaney's father, who has no love for Ryan McCall.

`Peekaboo Baby' is another great read from an author we've come to expect the best in romantic suspense.

A must read!

This is one of the best books I've read in a while. I've read over 300 books this year, and this book is by far one of the BEST! The emotions were high, the action is intense, and the passion brewing between Delaney, and Ryan was hot and steamy. The plot was very good, and the suspense of the story unfolding kept me very interested.

Sample from chapter 1 - No amount of strength could have stopped the tears that sprang to her eyes. Hot tears that burned against the cool rain speckling her lashes. Delaney fought the tears, and lost. The fear and dread were overwhelming. Dr. Keys or someone else at the clinic might have used her son as a guinea pig, and those experiments might have irreversible long term effects.

Sample from chapter 3 - Ryan heard Delaney scream. A sound of terror that he was sure he would remember for the rest of his life. If he had a rest of his life, that is. As he swerved to the right, it occurred to him that this could turn out to be a fatal accident. He knew what was out there. A deep, six foot wide irrigation ditch. Almost certainly overflowing with rainwater. A second later, Ryan took out the almost certainly. Even though he tried to keep the car on the road, he wasn't successful. They hut the narrow shoulder of soggy, slick gravel, skidded and then plunged right into the watery ditch.

Sample from chapter 6 - Ryan hadn't even been aware that he was holding his breath until he became light headed. Actually, he began to get downright dizzy. Since collapsing would put a serious dent in the stalwart, rock hard image he wanted to portray, he drew in a long breath. And he waited. Simply put, it was entirely possible that Delaney held his future and his heart in her hands.

Sample from chapter 7 - "Do you understand that I can't lose my son again?" He asked. Definitely not a thunderous accusation. No anger whatsoever. But there was pain. Delaney could feel it. In him. In her. It was thick and real, unreachable, and yet it was there. Right there. And she had a sickening fear that it would get worse before this was over. There was also an equally sickening feeling that this would never be over.

A VERY LIVELY MYSTERY! - CLONEING?

Definitely a four plus stars.

I still haven't figured out how they can clone an asexual baby.

No egg, no sperm just DNA?

Whoa, Delaney Nash is informed that there has been some DNA manipulation done on her son. On a very wet night she confronts Dr. Bryson Keyes about the truth of her child and learns that possibly Ryan McCall is the biological father.

Ryan McCall hates the wet and stormy nights as they remind him of his great lose of his wife and son, Adam. He is not in the mood to receive a visit from the daughter of his antagonist, Richard Nash.

He is holding himself in check in listening to Delaney's request to see a picture of his son.

Suddenly accidents start to happen that involve both Delaney and Ryan so that he diplomatically insists that she and her son, Patrick move into his estate. Better security.

Who is trying to kill him and Delaney? Her father, maybe? Dr. Bryson Keyes? But Keyes has disappeared. Dr. Emmett Montgomery? He is the head of the New Hope fertility clinic. Does he want to cover up what happened to Delaney's donor embryo?

What happened to Spears records?

The mystery deepens and agravates the hormonal drive of a man afraid to love and a woman wanting love. Could they find a way to have a family?

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED author - great story - oh yeah, PMS - pretty decent characters.

Jeffrey A. Hoffer (hoffer@udayton.edu) is the Sherman -- Standard Register Professor of Data Management in the MIS, Operations Management, and Decision Sciences Department at the University of Dayton. He received a PhD from Cornell University in 1973 and was on the faculties of Case Western Reserve University and Indiana University before joining UD. He is a founder of the INFORMS College on Information Systems, the International Conference on Information Systems (and its conference chair in 1985), and the Association for Information Systems. He is author of many scholarly publications in the areas of database management, data warehousing, systems analysis, strategic systems planning, and human-computer interaction. He is co-author of several leading textbooks: "Modern Database Management," "Modern Systems Analysis and Design," "Essentials of Systems Analysis and Design," "Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design," and "Managing Information Technology: What Managers Need to Know," all published by Prentice-Hall. This text is designed for an introductory course in database management. I Such a course is usually required as part of an information systems curriculum in business schools, computer technology programs, and applied computer science departments. The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and International Federation of Information Processing Societies (IFIPS) curriculum guidelines (for example, IS `97) all outline this type of database management course. Previous editions of our text have been used successfully for more than 15 years at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as in management and professional development programs.

This text represents an extensive revision and updating of the fifth edition of Modern Database Management. These revisions are necessary to accommodate the technical, managerial, and methodological changes occurring at an ever-increasing pace in this field. However, we have endeavored to retain the best features of our previous editions. We have made every effort to justify the title Modern Database Management, which was introduced in the fourth edition.

In this sixth edition we have changed the order of authorship because of the reduced involvement of Fred McFadden as he eases into retirement. Fred has reviewed every page of the manuscript and provided sage guidance on the direction of the revisions. Fred McFadden is the "father" of this text, and his words and ideas will always be present on its pages.

The sixth edition of Modern Database Management updates and expands materials in areas undergoing rapid change due to improved managerial practices, database design tools and methodologies, and database technology. The themes of the sixth edition reflect the major trends in the informations systems field and the skills required of modern information systems graduates:

Part I: The Context of Database Management

Chapter 1: The Database Environment. This chapter discusses the role of databases in organizations and previews the major topics in the remainder of the text. The chapter introduces a revised classification scheme that now recognizes the four types of databases outlined in the fifth edition—personal, work group, departmental, and enterprise—and now includes Internet/ intranet/extranet databases. The explanation of enterprise databases is expanded to include databases that are part of enterprise resource planning systems and data warehouses. The chapter updates the discussion of the evolution of database technologies from pre-database files to modern object-relational and Web-enabled systems. The chapter continues to present a well-organized comparison of database technology compared to conventional file-processing systems.

Chapter 2: Database Development Process. This chapter presents a detailed discussion of the role of database development within the broader context of information systems development. The chapter explains the process of database development for both structured life cycle and prototyping methodologies. The chapter continues to discuss important issues in database development, including management of the diverse group of people involved in database development and frameworks for understanding database architectures and technologies. The chapter also continues to emphasize the information engineering methodology in database development, including the role of the enterprise data model. Reviewers frequently note the compatibility of this chapter with what students learn in systems analysis and design classes.

Part II: Database Analysis

Chapter 3: Modeling Data in the Organization. This chapter, with a new title, presents a thorough introduction to conceptual data modeling with the entity-relationship model. The new chapter title reflects a refocusing of the chapter on the reason for the entity-relationship model: to unambiguously document the rules of the business that influence database design. The chapter contains a thoroughly updated section on the latest approaches to modeling business rules, which has been moved from Chapter 4. Specific subsections explain in detail how to name and define elements of a data model, which are essential in developing an unambiguous E-R diagram. A new section addresses an issue many students face as they learn data modeling: whether to represent data as attributes or relationships. The chapter continues to proceed from simple to more complex examples, and it concludes with a comprehensive E-R diagram for Pine Valley Furniture Company.

Chapter 4: The Enhanced E-R Model and Business Rules. This chapter presents a discussion of several advanced E-R data model constructs. New to the chapter is an introduction of entity clustering, which is a way to present simpler versions of an E-R diagram. The chapter extensively updates coverage of the GUIDE business rules methodology based on the latest guidelines, and now shows the structure of these guidelines, which will facilitate student understanding. The chapter continues to present a thorough coverage of supertype/subtype relationships.

Part III: Database Design

Chapter 5: Logical Database Design and the Relational Model. This chapter describes the process of converting a conceptual data model to the relational data model. It features an improved discussion of the characteristics of foreign keys and introduces the important concept of a non-intelligent enterprise key. Enterprise keys (also called surrogate keys for data warehouses) are being emphasized as some concepts of object-orientation migrate into the relational technology world. The discussion of functional dependencies and normalization has been somewhat enhanced. The chapter continues to emphasize the basic concepts of the relational data model and the role of the database designer in the logical design process.

Chapter 6: Physical Database Design and Performance. This chapter describes the steps that are essential in achieving an efficient database design. The chapter contains a new emphasis on ways to improve database performance. Several sections have been enhanced with references to specific techniques available in Oracle and other DBMSs to improve database processing performance. The discussion of indexes has been expanded to include descriptions of types of indexes (primary and secondary indexes, join index, hash index table) that are more widely available in database technologies as techniques to improve query processing speed. The discussion of RAID has been updated to reflect the latest thinking on this important technology. The chapter continues to emphasize the physical design process and the goals of that process.

Part IV: Implementation

Chapter 7: SQL. This chapter presents a thorough introduction to the SQL used by most DBMSs (SQL-92) and introduces the changes that are included in the latest standard (SQL-99). The major change for the sixth edition is that the overall coverage of SQL is expanded and divided into this and the next chapter. This chapter includes more examples of SQL code, using mostly SQL-99 syntax and some Oracle 8i syntax. There is an improved coverage of views, both dynamic and materialized. Chapter 7 explains the SQL commands to create and maintain a database and to program single-table queries. The chapter continues to use the Pine Valley Furniture Company case to illustrate a wide variety of practical queries and query results.

Chapter 8: Advanced SQL. This new chapter continues the explanation of SQL with a careful explanation of multiple-table queries, transaction integrity, data dictionary, triggers and stored procedures, and embedded SQL in other programming language programs. All forms of the OUTER JOIN command are now covered. This chapter illustrates how to store the results of a query in a derived table, the CAST command to convert data between different data types, and the CASE command for doing conditional processing in SQL. Amazingly well written

I bought this book for a DBMS course in a university and I liked it. This is the best written book compared to any IT book on any subject I've read. Everything seems so easy and simple with this. And this covers a lot of ground, enough at least for any basic level DBMS course. It covers the basics, SQL, (E)ER-diagrams, O-O db's, warehousing, etc.
What this is NOT: this is not a hands-on guide for real work. This is the first introduction to what you should know before beginning any DB-related work.

Great Introductory Text

Good up-to-date introductory text on Database Systems. It covers all the bases although in a less quantative way than the Elmasri/Navathe or Ramakrishnan/Gehrke texts. Excellent web based support material. Also, if you get the Oracle Edition (ISBN 0201383721) you'll get 3 great CD's: Oracle Designer/2000, Rel. 2.1; Oracle Developer/2000, Rel. 2.1, and Personal Oracle 7, Rel. 7.3.4. I found this package of text and CD's to be the best value on the market.

Good content overall

I used this book in graduate school while taking the Database Management System course. The book has usefull information. It help me understand and practice normalization. Some unfamiliar concepts also were learnt from the book. I can recommend this book to anyone getting into the database world.
