" So it was with surprise that some of the info in this book seemed like it was written sight unseen
By JungleMama
I've traveled the globe with Lonely Planet as my guide for 25 years. My travel companion for the trip to Cambodia had only traveled first class for business his whole life, so this mode of travel was foreign to him. But after a week of screw ups based on him disregarding the book, he, too, was reciting the mantra, "What does Lonely Planet say?"

So it was with surprise that some of the info in this book seemed like it was written sight unseen. Most particularly glaring was the gushing review of the country's largest waterfall, in Mondulkiri provence. Yes, it's enormous. But the road to get there is a spine twisting, skill crushing one hour with the reward of roaring waterfalls situated amongst what literally looks like a dump. Trash is prevalent all over Cambodia, as in every developing nation. But this was so bad, I wondered if it was possible to create a waterfall on a landfill. Run-down, dumpy, filthy, trashed. This was the only depressing and disappointing experience in Cambodia. It was a stop that would only be worth it if it were on the side of the road on the way to somewhere else. Unfortunately, these falls are not on the way to anywhere; they are a destination. And not worth even 10 minutes. The key to LP's success for more than a quarter century is in telling the truth. If the author had actually been to this site, he/she would not, in good conscience, been able to write such a glowing account.

Likewise, the author(s) never let on that Mondulkiri is just now emerging as a travel destination. It was written up as it were established. Overall, a traveler loves nothing more than to stumble upon a fairly undiscovered destination. However, the fact that LP didn't call this out caused confusion for us. It wasn't until we realized that tourism has just gotten underway in earnest in the past 7 months that the experience we were having there started to make sense. Additionally, the guide book sent us on a wild goose chase to the WWF offices to try to arrange a trek. After a frustrating hunt for the office, we were met by the patient, but clearly tired-of-this-routine WWF employee who kindly informed us that they do not organize tours and that the only people who sought them out were readers of Lonely Planet…due to the inaccurate information in the guide book.

Lonely Planet, your value is in your honesty and accuracy. When your readers start to wonder if you've actually been to the destination you have sent us to, you are no longer the trusted guide.

LP useful but not critical for Angkor
By Liam H Dooley
I only went to Siem Reap/Angkor and the stilt village about 1 hour away. So the review is about LP and these two places.

I love LP because it's available for Kindle, unlike a lot of guides, and has generally good and useful information at quantity - though at the cost of mediocre maps and almost no photos.

I found LP useful for the temples of Angkor Wat, as most of the temples had very limited to no written descriptions. LP tends to be outdated; even though they publish new editions, these tend to be a minimal update.

Just a few small tips that LP didn't emphasize well enough: 1) there are a lot of ATMs all over Siem Reap. LP suggested that there were just a few, but basically they were every 50 meters. 2) You can do a lot in 3 tiring, busy days: Small circuit, Large Circuit, then out-of-city excursion. LP tends to overestimate the time you need for everything, and as I result I stayed 5.5 days in Siem Reap with what was in the end a trip that was a bit slow.

As LP explained but I found absolutely impossible to believe, Cambodia uses two currencies simultaneously. Cambodian Riel for anything less than about 2 or 3 USD, and USD for anything more.

All told, however, again, LP was useful for this trip though I can see why one could get by without it much more than other places I've been, as the temples are easy to visit by following the circuits (that every Tuk-Tuk driver knows and every map has marked out), and in general the tourism industry is very well run in the city/region.

Great book
By Laoshi
I just got back from a 3-week trip to Cambodia, and I used Lonely Planet to guide me. I would say that I am a "flashpacker," which is someone who is between a backpacker and a luxury, rich tourist. When I was in my 20s, I backpacked a lot around Europe and Asia, but now that I am older in my 40s, I prefer to stay in mid-range priced hotels. I still, however, travel around with a backpack rather than a suitcase on wheels. The Lonely Planet Cambodia guide fit my style of traveling perfectly.

Just a word of warning. Don't expect prices to be exactly the same as what is listed in Lonely Planet. Things change very quickly, especially prices, in this part of the world. Your best bet is to go online to confirm prices or just be flexible when you get to Cambodia.

The section on Phnom Penh is very good. I think the book covers all the main tourist attractions very well. The section on Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields is good. Unfortunately, the documentary at Tuol Sleng is no longer being shown, and there is no information whether it will return. The section on hotels is perfect. I stayed in a hotel that was top-rated by Lonely Planet and it was the best hotel I have ever stayed at. The restaurant section is extensive, but restaurants are always closing and opening, so it's best to check tripadvisor for this. I ate at several restaurants listed in LP. I only wish they had fewer western restaurants listed and more Cambodian restaurants. Eating at local restaurants in the capital was very intimidating for me, and I don't think LP gave enough guidance on it.

The sections on Siem Reap and Angkor Wat are brilliant! There are several very helpful maps on the temples and several tips on what order to see the temples in and when to see them. There is also a very detailed description of each of the numerous temples. I would suggest buying an extra guidebook on the temples.
Unfortunately, the rest of the sections are not as good as the first two. The southern part, especially the islands, is not very comprehensive. I actually think that is probably because this part is changing sooooo fast. There isn't a good listing of hotels and restaurants. Another section that is not very good is the northeast. This part of the country is becoming THE place to travel especially for backpackers. There isn't a lot of information for mid-range travelers. Your best bet is to go online to find out the latest information about this region and about all the treks. LP downplays this region, so I was not planning on going there, but when I got there I heard so many good things about Mondulkiri that I changed my plans after I got there.

A few things that are missing from LP is information on phones and technology. Bring a cheap flip phone with you in which you can use a local SIM card. Another thing that LP skimps on is the section on Cambodian food.

I like that LP picks certain hotels and restaurants for their TOP-CHOICES. This is helpful, but it could be much more helpful if they did it for each of the 3 levels of prices: top, middle, and low. The hotels that they select for their top choices are usually out of my price range.

I also like that they give itineraries for various lengths of travel--very helpful. They also do it for the major cities.

This is a great guidebook, and I highly recommend using it. Pretty much most western travelers use this book.

Hug Dancing, by Shelby Hearon

With wit and feeling Shelby Hearon takes us into the life and world of Cile Tait, age thirty-nine, of Waco, Texas. A woman of charm and integrity, she summons up the courage to burn her bridges and defect from her marriage to the Grace Presbyterian Church’s minister, only to be stunned by the complete lack of flame, smoke or hubbub of any kind that follows.

Here is an inner-directed, sensuous, self-liberated woman impelled to make a place for herself in a society where church-centered propriety (embodied in her preacher-husband, whose constricting bed and board she leaves) mingles with country-style macho (in the person of Andy, her long-lost high school sweetheart and hug-dancing partner, who resurfaces and reclaims her)… and with the eternal Dallas dash (Andy’s bandbox-stylish wife). It is a new world where superconducting supercolliders, threatening famlands, have brought into the area a global mix of superscientists (including the beautiful Korean who may be moving toward the marriage Cile has vacated), where the rumble of money appears to underlie almost every mysterious action and where Cile’s two daughters, young Amazons with a passion to save the world from exological disaster, are already charting their own independent courses.

Yet the more things change, the more they are destined to repeat the past. So it goes in Shelby Hearon’s wickedly observant novel, whose convolutions, through three months from Wind Day to Earth Day, trace the amazing course of true love la 1990s.

From Publishers Weekly
Hearon's delightful 12th novel, after Owning Jolene , is a racy, realistic romance that follows Cile Tait, a parson's wife in Waco, Tex., on the road to happily-ever-after with her reclaimed high-school sweetheart. After they discover that they're still in love with each other while waltzing together at the Heart of Texas Fairgrounds, Cile and Drew Williams determine to wait three years, until her two daughters and his two sons are in high school, before she leaves her dour husband, Eben, and he his wealthy wife from Dallas, Mary Virginia. But after Cile tells Eben, who announces her imminent departure from his pulpit and who, she learns, is involved with a female congregant, Drew seems to hesitate. Cile finds out that the land values on his grandfather's farm, where they expected to live, are at issue, and that his mother and wife are planning to throw him a lavish 40th birthday party. Cile continues with her claims for independence, calling upon her father, from whom she's been estranged since her mother's death 20 years earlier. Hearon's tricky, credible resolution involves Cile's and Drew's children, engaging teenagers full of surprises; additional knowledge about her mother's death; and a reconciliation with Drew's mother. A lively and accomplished turn around the dance floor. Author tour.

From Library Journal
The course of true love rarely runs smoothly, even in 1990s Waco, Texas. Cile Tait is preparing to leave her rigid Presbyterian minister-husband for her old long-lost high-school sweetheart and hug-dancing partner Drew. But before she can live happily ever after, Cile must deal with Lila Mae, Drew's elegant mother who is opposed to the affair; Mary Virginia, Drew's acquisitive Dallas wife who wants to sell Drew's farm for big bucks to a government supercollider project; Jae-Moon, the beautiful Korean parishoner who is supplanting Cile in her husband's affections; and four teenagers (Cile's and Drew's). Most of all, Cile must confront the legacy of her mother's death in a flash flood, an event that separated Cile and Drew years ago and threatens to divide them again. Hearon ( Owning Jolene , LJ 12/88) deftly portrays the conflict in modern Texas life between the old ways of country dancing and barbeques and the new Sunbelt world of semiconductors and Pacific Rim scientists. While there is no great depth here, Hearon's warmth, humor, and affection for her characters recommend this to popular fiction collections.
- Wilda Williams, "Library Journal"
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Although not quite up to Hearon's last (Owning Jolene, 1989) in wild comic invention or hortatory muscle, still this tale offers another girl-breaking-loose--here, from a pointless marriage--along with some warm-to-barbed humor. It all takes place within some heavy weather in Waco, Texas. Thirty-two-year-old Cile Tait, mother of two ``middle-school Amazons,'' is married to Eben, pastor of an established Presbyterian church. The first indication that passion could flare a bit higher comes when, after 12 years, Cile again meets Drew-- with whom Cile was ``crazy mad sweethearts'' in high school. Drew is now married to gold-accoutered ``Dallas Girl'' Mary Virginia. They have two neat, gentlemanly boys who wear tennis whites (which can be turned inside out, Cile discovers, to reveal surprises). Cile and Drew cannot keep apart, and they prepare to tell respective spouses that they demand divorces. Hearing the news, Eben merely looks judicious, the way he did when agreeing to move weekly sex from Wednesday to Thursday. He also has in the wings a Korean, Dr. Song, who will bring to marriage ``real science corridor bucks.'' (The real reason Eben has been disappointed with Cile's failure to bring money into the home is the church: ``No one is troubled by lack of faith; they want a new roof.'') Meanwhile, Mary Virginia has her eye on Drew's farmland and ignores the divorce request. A sunny ending is in the works, though, as Cile finds a parent and stepparent anew, buys a house, and meets Drew to make love while storms rage and the kids cut up. A warmhearted, happy tale with bright, funny talk and love all around. -- Copyright 1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Pastor's wife rekindles old flame
By Karen Potts
Cile Tait is married to a staid and rigid Presbyterian minister. Although not sure of her beliefs, Cile attempts to be a good wife and to serve her husband and the church. When she comes across her old high school boyfriend Andy, they begin an affair and eventually plan to divorce their respective spouses and marry one another. In some ways, the announcement is ridiculously (and somewhat unrealistically) easy. None of their four kids seems to have a problem with their parents' marriages breaking up and the congregation waves Cile a world-weary goodbye without any of the recriminations which one might expect. In other ways, the breakup seems to cause problems as far as Andy's farmland and Cile's independence is concerned. The book has a lot of flashbacks which are sometimes hard to distinguish from the current action. The book is saved by the wry commentaries on life in small-town Texas and on the greed which seems to be at the center of so many events of the 90's.

Trying
By A. Hogan
Look, this is not SUPPOSED to surplant the King James Version[which has spurious translations, as anyone who has read the Greek knows. But i digress] This is an interesting and faithful attempt to re-interpert Scripture ,much in the same way the version" Good News for Modern Man" did 35 years ago. Reaching oput to people who normally feel excluded is a GOOD thing, especially those on the "margins" whom most congregations would hardly welcome. A good effort, an act of kindness by the author.Well Done

Great for first time readers of the Bible
By Ellen Ferguson
This is not meant to be a study Bible. This is meant to be a Bible that gets people, who would normally not read the Bible, reading the Bible. My daughter's boyfriend read this from cover to cover and LOVED it. He had never read the Bible before. This got him interested and understanding things in his own language and now he is ready to switch to a study Bible. I heard the author speak many years ago and he explained that this was not a "translation" it was a paraphrase much like the Message.

Ghost (Track), by Jason Reynolds

A National Book Award Finalist for Young People’s Literature.

Ghost wants to be the fastest sprinter on his elite middle school track team, but his past is slowing him down in this first electrifying novel of a brand-new series from Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award–winning author Jason Reynolds.

Ghost. Lu. Patina. Sunny. Four kids from wildly different backgrounds with personalities that are explosive when they clash. But they are also four kids chosen for an elite middle school track team—a team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics if they can get their acts together. They all have a lot to lose, but they also have a lot to prove, not only to each other, but to themselves.

Ghost has a crazy natural talent, but no formal training. If he can stay on track, literally and figuratively, he could be the best sprinter in the city. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasons—it all starting with running away from his father, who, when Ghost was a very little boy, chased him and his mother through their apartment, then down the street, with a loaded gun, aiming to kill. Since then, Ghost has been the one causing problems—and running away from them—until he meets Coach, an ex-Olympic Medalist who blew his own shot at success by using drugs, and who is determined to keep other kids from blowing their shots at life.

Gr 5–9—Castle "Ghost" Crenshaw lives with his single mother; his father is serving time in prison after firing a gun at Ghost and his mom three years ago—and Ghost has been running ever since. While running one day, he stops to watch a track practice and decides to crash the race. Impressed, the coach offers him a position on the team. His mom reluctantly agrees to let him join as long as he can behave himself and stay out of trouble in school. This is a struggle for the impulsive Ghost, but with Coach's help, he learns the advantages of diligent practice and teamwork. Reynolds paints a realistic picture of a boy who needs the support of his community to channel his talent and energy. Supporting adult characters, like shop owner Mr. Charles and Coach, are positive, nuanced, and well-developed. The diverse team members are dealing with their own struggles, which will be explored in three future installments. The consequences for Ghost's misbehavior are somewhat inconsistent, but the detailed and informative descriptions of running and training with an elite track team more than make up for this. VERDICT The focus on track athletics—a subject sorely lacking in the middle grade space—combined with the quality of Reynolds's characters and prose, makes this an essential purchase.—Karen Yingling, Blendon Middle School, Westerville, OH

Review
Castle "Ghost" Cranshaw feels like he's been running ever since his dad pulled that gun on him and his mom—and used it.His dad's been in jail three years now, but Ghost still feels the trauma, which is probably at the root of the many "altercations" he gets into at middle school. When he inserts himself into a practice for a local elite track team, the Defenders, he's fast enough that the hard-as-nails coach decides to put him on the team. Ghost is surprised to find himself caring enough about being on the team that he curbs his behavior to avoid "altercations." But Ma doesn't have money to spare on things like fancy running shoes, so Ghost shoplifts a pair that make his feet feel impossibly light—and his conscience correspondingly heavy. Ghost's narration is candid and colloquial, reminiscent of such original voices as Bud Caldwell and Joey Pigza; his level of self-understanding is both believably childlike and disarming in its perception. He is self-focused enough that secondary characters initially feel one-dimensional, Coach in particular, but as he gets to know them better, so do readers, in a way that unfolds naturally and pleasingly. His three fellow "newbies" on the Defenders await their turns to star in subsequent series outings. Characters are black by default; those few white people in Ghost's world are described as such. An endearing protagonist runs the first, fast leg of Reynolds' promising relay. (Fiction. 10-14) (Kirkus Reviews 8/1/16)

Castle “Ghost” Cranshaw has been running for three years, ever since the night his father shot a gun at him and his mother. When he gets recruited by a local track coach for a championship team, they strike a deal: if Ghost can stop getting into fights at school, he can run for the Defenders, but one altercation and he’s gone. Despite Ghost's best intentions, everyone always has something to say about his raggedy shoes, homemade haircut, ratty clothes, or his neighborhood, and he doesn’t last 24 hours without a brawl. Will Coach and his mom give him another chance to be part of something bigger than himself, or is he simply destined to explode? With his second fantastic middle-grade novel of the year (As Brave as You, 2016), the ferociously talented Reynolds perfectly captures both the pain and earnest longing of a young boy. The first in the four-book Track series, this is raw and lyrical, and as funny as it is heartbreaking. It tackles issues such as theft, bullying, and domestic violence with candor and bravery while opening a door for empathy and discussion. An absolute must-read for anyone who has ever wondered how fast you must be to run away from yourself.HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Is anyone else putting out so many stellar books so quickly? The author of The Boy in the Black Suit and All American Boys (both 2015) keeps dashing along. — Becca Worthington

 (Booklist, STARRED REVIEW 9/1/16)

Reynolds (As Brave As You) uses a light hand to delve into topics that include gun violence, class disparity, and bullying in this compelling series opener. Seventh-grader Castle Cranshaw, nicknamed Ghost, knows nothing about track when a former Olympian recruits him as a sprinter for one of the city's youth teams. As far as Ghost is concerned, "whoever invented track got the whole gun means go thing right," something he learned firsthand when his father tried to shoot Ghost and his mother in their apartment three years prior. The trauma has had ripple effects on Ghost, including angry outbursts ("I was the boy.... with all the scream inside"), altercations at school, stealing, and lying. Joining the track team provides new friends, goals, and an opportunity for Ghost to move beyond his past. Ghost is a well-meaning, personable narrator whose intense struggles are balanced by a love of world records, sunflower seeds, and his mother. Coach's relationship with Ghost develops into a surrogate father-son scenario, adding substantial emotional resonance and humor to the mix. Ages 10–up. (Publishers Weekly *STARRED REVIEW* August 8, 2016)

(School Library Journal *STARRED* September 2016)

Sometimes a whole life can change in one night. For seventh-grader Castle Cranshaw, that night was three years ago when his father tried to shoot him and his mother, when "the liquor made him meaner than he'd ever been." That's when Castle started to call himself "Ghost," because Mr. Charles, who let the terrified pair take refuge in his all-night store, "looked at us like he was looking at two ghosts." And that was the night he learned how to run... really run.

Jason Reynolds (As Brave as You) has a playful, intimate and conversational style, and in Ghost, a middle-grade series debut, he tells the story of how an unforgettable flight of terror led to an African American boy's instinct to run--fast. One day on his walk home, Ghost sees a track team practicing with their short bald coach who looks like "a turtle with a chipped tooth." Keenly observant Ghost becomes annoyed with one of the runners others perceive as unbeatable, and decides to "keep up with him, if not beat him" even though he "ain't ever had a running lesson." He stubbornly persists until the coach relents: "Listen, you get one run, you hear me?"

The story of Ghost's evolving relationships with his anger, with his ever-worried mother, with Coach Brody and with running is a joy to read. For a boy who's "got a lot of scream inside," Ghost can riff entertainingly on topics from eating sunflower seeds to 100-meter sprints. Ghost is about kids who are, in both senses, running for their lives, and the generous souls who help them along the way.

Discover: In Jason Reynolds's excellent middle-grade novel, a boy learns to run when his father shoots a gun at him--and he never stops running.

 (Shelf Awareness, STARRED REVIEW 9/6/16)

Castle Crenshaw discovered his fleet feet on the night his drunken father pulled a gun on his mother and him, and the pair took off running into the night. Now Dad is in jail, Mom is working too hard, but Castle’s getting by—or he would be if the likes of seventh-grade bully Brandon would just leave him alone. Hanging out on the park bleachers one afternoon, Castle, who insists on the nickname “Ghost,” watches a track team at their season opening practice, unimpressed. When he swaggers up to the starting line and shows the team hotshot that he’s really not all that, Ghost’s obvious talent catches Coach’s eye; after a quick meeting with Mom, he finds himself joining the Defenders, a city track team. Despite his speed, he’s a rank novice in terms of team playing, and his off-track conduct—fighting at school, stealing—isn’t all that great either, but Coach is merciful and doggedly insistent that Ghost can do better. A message-heavy scene in which the newbies bond over Chinese food and shared family secrets might play on tropes but successfully tugs at heartstrings. The final pages have Ghost lined up beside none other than the hated Brandon, but an ambiguous ending confirms that this is less about Ghost’s track success than his journey to self-worth. Readers (track stars or slowpokes) will find that the redemptive relationship among a supportive mom, a skillful coach who believes in second (and third) chances, and a determined young man comes through louder than the final “BOOM” of the starter gun. (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books October 2016)

When it comes to providing mirrors for contemporary African American teens,Reynolds (When I Was the Greatest, rev. 1/14; The Boy in the Black Suit, rev. 3/15)has proven himself to be an emerging leader. His latest offering is the first in
a projected series about four middle-school athletes and their efforts to betterthemselves, on and off the track. The first leg of this literary relay belongs to ourtitle character. Castle “Ghost” Cranshaw is a young man with a taste for sunflowerseeds, Guinness World Records, and people watching; he also has a proclivity forgetting into trouble, fighting, and running, stemming from the night his father(now in prison) pulled a gun on him and his mother. When Ghost happens uponthe citywide track team, the Defenders, at practice and impulsively bests its fastestsprinter, the coach sees potential in the seventh grader. Ghost’s path to seeingthe same potential in himself is littered with stumbling blocks, including a pairof expensive silver running shoes Ghost can’t afford but is convinced will help
him run faster. Reynolds has created a wonderfully dynamic character in Ghost;his first-person narrative is one with which young readers will readily identify.Conflicting emotions are presented honestly and without judgment—while Ghostworks through the trauma of his father’s violent act, he is also able to hold onto positive memories. Reynolds’s introduction of the series characters—Ghost,Lu, Patina, and Sunny—will have readers rooting for the entire Defenders team. (Horn Book Magazine November/December 2016)

Ghost is a Major Hit in My Fifth Grade Classroom!
By Kendice
I’m currently a fifth grade teacher with the gifted inclusion class. My school is located in a low-income high minority area. My goal this year was to not just choose good books for them to read, but to choose good DIVERSE books. I read about someone saying something along the lines of everyone needs to be able to see themselves in a book and it resonated with me. I think it’s equally important to learn about others and their circumstances too.

To make a longer story longer, I wanted to choose something relevant to my students and their lifestyles and I wanted a MC who was African American. I’d read Jason Reynold and Brendan Kiely’s “All American Boy” and when I heard about “Ghost” I knew I wanted it for my students.

I chose to read the first chapter aloud to my students and it was a homerun for them from the very first page. They were drawn in by his use of language, writing style, and the plot itself. Castle is lovable and most importantly he’s real. Whether my students are as economically disadvantaged as him, have a family member in prison, or have simply liked a sport or been in an “altercation” at school, every single student identified with him in some way.

I pulled articles from online about albinism (to connect to Lu), the effects of a parent being in prison, and about the benefits of participating in after-school programs to show different relationships and connections to the text. It has been a great experience.

I HIGHLY recommend this book for middle grades readers and up. Everything about it is worth reading and the end will leave you wanting more!

Move fast to get this into the hands of kids
By E. R. Bird
This is a generalization, but in my experience librarians really enjoy reading within their comfort zones. They’ll travel outside of them from time to time but always they return to the books that they like the most. Children’s librarians are just the same. The fantasy readers stick to fantasy. The realism fans go with realism. Graphic novel readers with comics. When I served on a yearly committee of librarians in New York I’d notice that some books were difficult to get anyone to read. Horse books, for example, just sat on our shelves untouched. Nonfiction could take some prodding. And as for sports books . . . forget about it. Nobody ever got near them. Still, you can’t give up on them. Mike Lupica and Tim Green may rule the field but that doesn’t mean other people don’t make a lot out of athletics. If our Newbery winning The Crossover by Kwame Alexander taught us anything, it was that. Now Jason Reynolds, a young adult author until this year, has produced a middle grade novel centered on that must unlikely of sports: track. It skirts the clichs. It dodges the usual pitfalls. It makes you care about a kid who keeps messing up over and over and over again. It’ll make you like sports books, even if you can’t generally stand them. And now we’ve got to find a way to get a lot of it into the hands of kids. Stat.

Call him Ghost. You can call him Castle Crenshaw if you want to (that’s technically his name) but he’s been calling himself Ghost ever since the night his dad got drunk and threatened Castle and his mom with a gun. Ghost learned to run that night and you might say he’s been running ever since. He’s got a load of anger inside that he doesn’t know how to deal with so he tends to take it out on others at school. Then one day he spots a track warm-up and takes an instant dislike to the albino kid in the expensive tracksuit. Without thinking about it twice Ghost beats the guy on the track, running on the outside, which gets the attention of the coach. Coach begs Ghost to join and Ghost reluctantly agrees but it isn’t what he expected. The other kids there all have their own lives, few of them easy. The running is much harder than anything Ghost has ever experienced before. And then there’s the fact that no matter how fast he is, Ghost can’t run away from trouble. It follows him and if he’s not careful it’s going to follow him right onto the track.

Baseball. Basketball. Even football. These are the sports of fiction. I doubt anyone has ever run any statistics on it, but if you were to gather together all the children’s sports books and group them by type, the baseball books would undoubtedly outweigh all the others 2:1. That’s because baseball is a game with a natural rise and fall to its action. Basketball has speed and football has brute force, all good things when writing a story. Track? In track you run and then you stop. At least that’s how I always looked at it. For Jason Reynolds, though, it’s different. He didn't write this book with track as a single focus. He looks at what the sport boils down to. Basically, this is a book about running. Running from mistakes (forgive the clich), from very real threats, for your life, and for your team. Why you run and where you run and how you run. And if that's where you're coming from, then track is a very good choice of a sport indeed.

On paper, this book looks like it’s the sort of story that’s all been done before. That’s where Reynolds’ writing comes in to play. First off, it’s worth noticing that Mr. Reynolds is blessed with a keen sense of humor. This comes to play not just in the text but also in little in-jokes here and there. Like the fact that one of the runners (that, I should mention, gets cut later in the book because his grades are slipping) is named Chris Myers. Christopher Myers is the son of Walter Dean Myers, and a friend to Jason Reynolds. I love Jason's descriptions too. Mr. Charles at the corner store, “looks just like James Brown if James Brown were white. . .” Or Ghost saying later, “… for something to make you feel tough, you gotta be a little bit scared of it at first.” There are some pretty fantastic callbacks hidden in the story as well. Right at the start, almost like it’s some kind of superhero origin story, we hear how Ghost heard the gun go off that night he ran away from his home with his mom and “I felt like the loud shot made my legs move even faster.” That ties in beautifully with the starter pistol that goes off at the very very end of the book.

But maybe what I like the most about Jason Reynolds’ books is that he applies this keen sense of the complexity to his characters. I don’t think the man could write a straight one-dimensional villain to save his soul. Even his worst characters have these brief moments of humanity to them. In this case, Ghost’s dad is the worst character. You don’t get much worse than shooting at your wife and kid after all. Yet for all that, Ghost still can't help but love the guy and eats sunflower seeds in his memory. Each character in the book has layers that you can peel away as the story progresses. Even Ghost, ESPECIALLY Ghost, who makes you want to yell and him and cheer for him, sometimes at the same time.

There’s been a monumental push for increased diversity in children’s literature in the last few years. Diversity can mean any number of things and it often focuses on race. In a weird way, increasing the number of racially diverse books on a given publisher’s release calendar isn’t hard if the publisher is dedicated to the notion. Far more difficult is figuring out how you increase the economic diversity. Middle grade characters are almost always middle class. If they’re working class then they tend to be historical. Contemporary lower income kids in realistic novels are almost unheard of. For example, how many books for children have you ever read with kids living in shelters? I’ve read just one, and I’m a children’s librarian. So I watched what Reynolds did here with great interest. Ghost isn’t destitute or anything but his single mom makes ends meet by working long hours at a hospital. Middle class kids are remarkably good at ignoring their own privilege while kids like Ghost become almost invisible. In the book, Ghost’s decision to initially race Lu isn’t solely based on how Lu struts around the track, thinking he’s the bee’s knees. It’s also on his clothes. “…Lu, was decked out in the flyest gear. Fresh Nike running shoes, and a full-body skintight suit . . . He wore a headband and a gold chain around his neck, and a diamond glinted in each ear.” Later Ghost makes a decision regarding a particularly fancy pair of running shoes. That’s an economic decision as well. Those are the most obvious examples, but the book is full of little mentions, peppered throughout, of where Ghost’s class comes in to things. It’s nice to see an author who gets that. We are often affected by forces outside our control, forces we don’t even necessarily notice, particularly when we’re children. If young readers see it, they’ll be reading between the lines, just like Reynolds wants them to.

Right at the beginning of the book, when Coach is trying to convince Ghost’s mom that he should be running, Ghost realizes that he’s in a situation that’s played out in loads of sports films. He thinks, “If this went like the movies, I was either going to score the game-winning touchdown (which is impossible in track) or . . . die.” Sometimes you can gauge how good a book is by how self-aware its characters are. But sometimes you just read a book, put it down, and think, “Man. That was good. That was really good.” This is a book that actually made me tear up, and there aren’t a lot of middle grade books that do that. I was rooting for Ghost hard, right until the end. I was caring about a sport that I’d never otherwise think about in a million years. And I was admiring it from start to finish for all that it accomplishes in its scant 180 pages. This is the book you hand to the kids who want something real and good and honest. There are a lot of Ghosts out there in the world. Hopefully some of them will discover themselves here. Run, don’t walk, to pick this book up.

For ages 10 and up.

Sprinting right into your heart...
By Draydreamin
It's no secret that I love everything with Jason Reynolds's name on it, but GHOST was really something special. It follows an impoverished kid name Castle "Ghost" Cranshaw who accidentally joins a recreational track team after beating the team's fastest sprinter in an impromptu race. Castle's been through a major trauma, and as his self-given nickname--GHOST--suggests, he does his best to move through the world under the radar to avoid trouble.

Of course he fails. And that's what I loved about this book. You have this kid who does a number of "bad" things, but it's hard to get mad at him because his reasons, for the most part, are good. Jason Reynolds does an amazing job of getting this kid's heart onto the page, and even when you're like "Nooooo, Ghost! Don't do it!", you're rooting for him.

And then there's Coach. Who Ghost describes as having a head that makes him look like a turtle (LOL!). Coach stands in brilliant contract to Ghost's father (who is at the center of the trauma Ghost has suffered), and when HIS backstory is finally revealed, the story coheres into this perfect, multifaceted-diamond start to what is sure to be an incredible middle grade series. Can't wait for the next book!

From the Back Cover

"If you sell based on a deep mission and purpose, revenue will follow. As Lisa Earle McLeod explains in this remarkable book, you have to start with how to change another life . . . then work back from that purpose."
—TOM RATH, bestselling author of StrengthsFinder 2.0

Most people believe that money is the primary motivator for top salespeople and that doing good by the world runs a distant second. That belief is wrong.

A single interview with a top-performing biotech salesperson led sales leadership consultant Lisa Earle McLeod on a six-year quest to undercover what goes on inside the minds of top-performing salespeople and how leaders can replicate that mindset across their organizations.

McLeod discovered that salespeople who sold with noble purpose—who truly wanted to make a difference to customers—consistently outsold salespeople who were focused on sales goals and money. More than 10,000 hours in the field with top sales performers from organizations like Apple, Kimberly-Clark, and Merck revealed that a Noble Sales Purpose (NSP) is the difference between a sales force that's merely effective and one that's truly outstanding.

Selling with Noble Purpose shows you how to ignite the True Believer that lurks in the heart of every salesperson. Because as much as salespeople want to make money, they also want to make a difference.

Define your NSP now!
By Oscar D. Gil Garagarza
The way I became a fan of Lisa was backwards from the way I usually become a fan of any writter. Usually, I hear about a book, read its reviews, buy the book, read the book, become a fan, and follow the author and her work. By the time I got Lisa's book in my hands for the first time, I had already had a very interesting two hour conversation with her, I had somebody take a picture of me with her, listened to her lecture, and gotten my copy of the book autographed by her. By then, I was already a fan, and I hadn't even read her book yet. So with great anticipation, I rewrote my "books to read" list, pushed the first 3 down the list, squeezed Selling With Noble Purpose in the top slot, and started to read it right away.
I wasn't disappointed at all. The book explains that sales people that have a nobler purpose other than just make money, usually do better, and even make more money, than those who don't. That nobler purpose could be saving lives, helping others to be more productive, or simply caring for your customer more than you care about making the sale. She calls it Noble Selling Purpose, or NSP.
She tells detailed stories about succesful sales people that have their own NSPs, and gives detailed instructions on how to write, build and practice you own NSP. This books serves well for people who want to discover their own NSP, as well as for managers and corporations that want to define an NSP for their sales force.
As Daniel Pink sugested in his book Selling is Human, and Darren Hardy repeatedly talked about in his editorials in Success Magazine, like it or not, we are all in sales. So even if you job title does not say "Sales", you are constantly trying to explain about your point of view, trying to convinve others, and selling yourself. Children try many different methods to convince their parents to have their way, and even parents have to explain to their children why they won't. You are constantly selling yourself, if not any other product or service. And I agree with Lisa, that you would be better off having a nobler porpuse other than getting your way when you do.
I highly recomend this book to everyone, and can't wait to read Lisa's next book, Leading With Noble Purpose.

Awesome Series!
By Freeman
This is a great series! :-) *The whole "Chasing" thing gets old after a while.* I don't remember if it was this book or the next one, but yeah.... that's probably the slowest and most annoying part of the whole series. Other than that I love this whole series. I just wished things had moved along a bit quicker.

No Verbose Vendor of Vacuous Verbiage He!

Jordan's verbose verbiage notwithstanding, it was (as usual) not entirely vacuous. The tales told were interesting enough to keep my eyes open late into the night long past my normal sleep time.

The pace of the last few of Jordan's books has become glacial. I keep reading because at some point he's going to get to the point and finish the storyline. I hope.
