About the Author
John A. Camara, PE, has authored more than a dozen books on Electrical and Computer PE, Nuclear PE, and FE exam preparation, enabling thousands of students and professionals to pass their engineering exams. He is a retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander and is currently a technical fellow with The Boeing Company. Mr. Camara received his bachelor of science degree in electrical and computer engineering/materials science and engineering from the University of California at Davis and his master of science degree in space systems from the Florida Institute of Technology.

Go ahead and get it

Good supplemental questions for the PE if you need to study a specific topic. Some of the questions go into waaayyy more depth than necessary for the PE. These questions follow the Reference Manual by Camara. I wouldn't say this a must have, but it does provide some benefit when trying to improve weak areas. I didn't work all the problems in this book but focused on questions from various practice test. I did pass the PE my first time.

Even though that is unfair, i will keep the original 2-star rating.

Anyways, i even posted inconsistent material. (The reference manual vs the practice problems contradict each other)

it is better than have ZERO to study for, but it is infuriating finding so many errors. It takes just a SINGLE other person to peruse through the text to find all those silly mistakes

Engineering Book not Power

This is an excellent review book for electrical engineering, it only has a few sections on power and the NEC.
The problems are challenging and will make you think, but the title is somewhat mid leading.

Great aid for the Primer

Saved me from having to write my own cards. It does not have the transliteration of the words on it, so it cannot help you in pronunciation, unfortunately. The verbs also do not have the nikkud on them, even though they are numbered to match the vocabulary words in the book and they DO have them there...instead they just have dots. This is because different verbs are used for different tenses and for masculine vs feminine usage. I used a colored sharpie and added them to the word then, using the same color, added the extra info on the back. For example, guarded is one of them, I added the patach and komets to the front, then added -ed to the back to match the actual vocabulary word being memorized.

All in all, a worthwhile purchase.

Excellent!!

Excellent supplement to the workbook. Bagged an A in the course because of these cards. I had a biblical Hebrew course which stressed reading and vocabulary over writing so when I tried to make my own flash cards I couldn't even recognize the characters I had written. Because we never practiced writing, the characters I made were very crude looking. With the cards I didn't have to worry about that and I brought a midterm grade up from a C to an A (with one retake allowed - C before cards, A after a weekend of studying with the cards). As many students know, flash cards are extremely effective method of learning new vocabulary and this purchase was definitely worth every penny.

inferior to the basics of biblical hebrew flash cards

hey folks

I bought the basics of biblical hebrew flash cards for use with Seows grammar for biblical hebrew, they are keyed to the 4 most common biblical hebrew guides. There are 980 in the box not 335 they are half the price of these ones. These ones only have words that occur 200 times or more but the bbh ones do words occurring 30 times or more.

the primer work book is really good but the flash cards are gash buy bbh flash cards Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary Cards (Zondervan Vocabulary Builder Series, The)

Wood's close readings are always revelatory and exciting, and this volume contains probably the best single essay ever written on a Hitchcock movie, Wood's analysis of Vertigo.

In 1965, Wood, now professor of film studies at York University, authored the well-regarded Hitchcock's Films . Since then he has become an avowed Marxist and feminist, and had modified his auteurist views. From these perspectives, the work has been reprinted, extensively footnoted and "corrected" by bracketed insertions, and combined with several new essays which essentially comprise another complete book. Where the first book focuses on the director's mature works, the second one critiques somewhat less-appreciated films and provides an overall thematic context. As brilliant as it is controversial

Most of the comments posted about this book are embarrassing in their refusal to engage properly with what Robin Wood is actually trying to argue. Previous readers appear to resent Wood's desire to take the cinema seriously, and suggest that we should look to Hitchcock's films for no more than "craft" and "technique". If that's all one is concerned with, I'm not sure why it would be worth reading a book on Hitchcock at all. Wood has always been firm in asserting that the experience of watching a film is both emotional and intellectual. Taking the cinema seriously doesn't mean one has to stop responding to it emotionally. Nor does Hitchcock's status as a consummate entertainer invalidate Wood's arguments that his films raise profound and troubling moral and political questions.

Wood writes beautifully. Complaints about his reliance on Freudian or Marxist terminology are wrongheaded - such terminology is in fact employed far more rarely than by most academic writers. Wood's use of language is magnificently precise and careful. It is true that he conducts his critique of Hitchcock, as of other filmmakers, from a leftwing viewpoint. One does not have to share his commitment to Marxism (a kind of reconstructed, humanistic Marxism, incidentally, which has nothing to do with the atrocities perpetrated by Mao or Stalin) in order to appreciate the strength of his analysis. Anyone who is prepared, as a reader, to engage in lively debate with a writer's ideological and moral assumptions, should be able to profit by reading Wood's book.

I certainly don't agree with everything Wood has to say either on a political or an aesthetic level. But no other writer on Hitchcock, or on the cinema, has the same depth, reach or passion for his subject. Hitchcock's Films Revisited, presenting in tandem Wood's earlier and later thoughts on one of the cinema's great masters, is not only great criticism; it is also a moving account of one man's personal and political evolution.

The Price of Innovation

Forty years ago Robin Wood joined a then-small number of serious critics who urged that Hitchcock be taken seriously. Since many of those critics did not receive a wide reading, Wood's effort was of extreme significance in garnering Hitch the respect he deserved.

It's wonderful to note that Wood, still writing, has continued to update his first work without repudiating or diluting any of it. He made some highly daring observations in 1966, which so many writers ridiculed or dismissed. His originality and critical integrity is so notable, though, that it has weathered these attacks and survived to the present, in actually even better form.

Consider, for example, that Wood countered a then-contemporary tend in dismissing "Marnie" as a failure. Instead, in his first book and most recent edition, he insists that "Marnie" be counted in among films like Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo and North by Northwest as a masterly pairing of visual images addressing psychological elements. And who else before Wood saw the utterly original qualities of "Vertigo," or deconstructed them more effectively?

You won't be sorry to have this book in your library. It originated a critical lanugage of film, and celebrated one of film's greatest contributors in a unique way.

Why is this a hundred dollars? I'd like to read a book about one of my favorite authors, but this is a bit much. Is it a textbook, and they all cost a hundred dollars? I know there are books on nuclear science which cost thousands of dollars, but I presumed that was because of all the fancy charts, and the fact that they'd only sell a dozen copies of a highly technical book. What's this one's excuse?

Dry, impersonal and filled with facts, the latest addition to the Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations series often reads like an over-long encyclopedia entry. Kirkwood, a professor of history at the University of Evansville, Indiana, divides the volume under subheadings like "Geography," "Population and Language," "Wage Labor" and "Colonial Economic Order." His most vivid chapters cover the Spanish conquest of the Aztec people and are rife with compelling details about that period’s brutality. For example, he explains that Aztecs sacrificed humans to their gods because they believed that "shooting a victim with arrows so that his blood dripped on to the ground was … a manner by which to revitalize the soil." Kirkwood occasionally presents his opinions as fact, as in his discussion of NAFTA and the "Americanization" of Mexico. He also provides very little detail about Mexico’s thriving arts communities and its church life; Frida Kahlo, for example, is mentioned in a closing chapter on the "Notable People in the History of Mexico" but doesn’t have a place in the main narrative. The volume does, however, give a comprehensive overview of the military and economic history of the U.S.’s southern neighbor—which makes it all the more unfortunate that Kirkwood decided to close his chronicle with Mexico’s 1997 election. Just enough

Although the writing seems almost as if it were translated from a foreign language (Spanish?), this little book answers most questions that Americans will have about the course of Mexican history. It may therefor suffice in that regard or serve as a base from which to pursue further inquiry.

Succint, useful history

The two greatest attributes of Kirkwood's History of Mexico are its brevity and readability. Roughly the length of a long novel, it makes for a quick and easy read for those traveling to Mexico or just interested in its basic history. It is short on cultural movements and longer on the military and economic evolution of the country. Like the editorial reviewer above, I wish Kirkwood would have dedicated significantly more room (and more facts) to present-day issues, such as immigration, the NAFTA, the peso bailout and the achievements and failures of the Fox administration. Still, the book provides a good, short, readable background on Mexican history for English speakers with limited basic knowledge of the country's history.

Still looking for a readable history of Mexico

For years I have been looking for a readable history of Mexico. On two previous occasions I gave up reading a book on Mexican history primarily because the writing was insipid. Well, the third time, with THE HISTORY OF MEXICO by Burton Kirkwood, did not prove to be the charm. I only made it through page 32.

Kirkwood writes that the goal of the book is "to introduce secondary school students and the mainstream public to the history of Mexico." Plus, the book is a compact 214 pages of text. Promising enough for me to give it a try.

The first two chapters - "Mexico Today" and "Mexico's Early Inhabitants" - were moderately informative and seemed to achieve the desired level of generality, though the writing itself was rather wooden. I did my best to ignore a couple rather glaring typographical errors (though, on second thought, one of them might actually have been astoundingly bad English syntax), but then on pages 28 and 29 there was this sentence:

"For the remainder of the fifteenth century, the Aztecs expanded their realm until they were unquestionably the dominant power in the Valley of Mexico and beyond."

Two sentences later came this sentence:

"Regardless of weak leadership in the position of king, the Aztecs expanded their realm and unquestionably were the dominant power in the Valley of Mexico and beyond."

At the top of page 32, in discussing the beginning of Cort�s's infamous expedition of conquest, Kirkwood tells us that after two unsuccessful missions to Mexico, the Governor of Cuba, Diego Vel�zquez, sent Hern�n Cort�s, and that the "decision to send Cort�s was a brilliant move in terms of Spanish imperialistic goals." Two paragraphs later he tells us that Cort�s embarked on the expedition without the authority of Vel�zquez and, indeed, in defiance of the Governor's orders that he be arrested.

Perhaps I am picking nits, but such sloppiness, coupled with the pedestrian prose, extinguished my desire to read the book. In truth, then, my two-star assessment is somewhat of a guess, no doubt adversely influenced by my personal frustration.

As matters stand, I am still looking for a readable history of Mexico. Suggestions are hereby solicited.

In 1898, two maneless male lions killed and devoured 135 Indian and African workers constructing a railroad bridge over the Tsavo River in Kenya. It took Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson, the engineer in charge of the project, nine months to hunt and kill the beasts, an ordeal recounted in his 1907 book, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo, and later the subject of two films, 1952's Bwana Devil and 1996's The Ghost and the Darkness. A century later, the story of Ghost and Darkness still fascinates and terrifies. Were they just rogue lions, or were they the "missing genetic link" between the prehistoric cave cats who hunted early humans and the modern African lion? Novelist Caputo (The Voyage) seeks answers to this intriguing question as he accompanies two separate expeditions to study the maneless lions of Tsavo. Unfortunately, the resulting book is a frustrating mix of personal travel narrative and scientific speculation, with no definite conclusions. Engaging look at unusual lions

"Ghosts of Tsavo" is part travelogue, part natural history, part murder mystery, and part mid-life crisis for its author Philip Caputo. What it is as a whole is a fascinating, engaging look at the lions of Tsavo Park in Kenya. Caputo first became interested in these unusual lions as a result of a visit to the Field Museum in Chicago as a young boy. Therein were "Ghost" and "Darkness" two enormous males lions that terrorized constructions workers building a rail line through Tsavo. In fact terrorized may be too weak a word as they are credited with killing at least 120 people and literarily halting construction until they were eventually hunted down and killed by British Lt. Col. Patterson who was heading up the project. He recounted this effort in his famous memoir "The Man Eaters of Tsavo" and kindled a fascination with Kenya's lions that lingered with Caputo for half a century.

What sets the lions of Tsavo apart from the more familiar ones we know from nature documentaries, is that they are much bigger, and the males are either maneless of have very short manes, in either case nothing like the regal mountains of fur on their cousins from the Serengeti. In the first half of the book, Caputo explores reasons as to why this might by the case. It is possible that since Tsavo is much warmer than the Serengeti, manes are too expensive in terms of internal resources to grow. Another possibility is that the thick scrub brush and thorns of the region wear down manes before they ever become truly impressive.

However, it is a more controversial theory that makes for the most entertaining reading. Caputo encounters several scientists who argue that the lions of Tsavo are genetically distinct from the lions on the Serengeti. Moreover, they argue that the lions of Tsavo are in fact a throw back to prehistoric lions, quite literally walking fossils. The point to the lack of manes, the much larger height and girth and the fact that Tsavo lions hunt the enormous Cape Buffalo as justifications for this thesis.

Ultimately, Caputo, in three journeys to Kenya over the course of eighteen months (once as a tourist and twice with scientific expeditions) is never able to definitively state which hypothesis is correct. However, that in no way detracts from his rambling, conversational narrative. Caputo is not a scientist, and he in no way pretends to be one, although he does (and justifiably so) consider himself a well-informed observer. As such, he is not constrained by the rigors of academia, and can therefore transfer his passion for these lions and the mystery surrounding them onto the page. In fact, towards the end he grows weary of the scientific studies as they somehow detract from the powerful aura that surrounds the lions.

If you are interested in lions in general, or if the prospect of some spine-tingling tales of man-eating lions sounds appealing, "Ghost of Tsavo" is well worth reading. However, beyond the surface elements, Caputo has written a book that captures the raw spirituality of nature, and that bemoans modern man's detachment from the primitive. So it is entirely likely that even if you have no interest in lions at all, you may be drawn to Caputo's lament for something we don't even realize we have lost. Either way, "Ghost's of Tsavo" is well worth reading.

Confronting the nightmare lions and oneself.

Long fascinated with the subject of man-eating lions, Philip Caputo does not pretend to be an expert on them, the environment, or African affairs. In fact, his lack of expertise and his desire to learn give this book some of its appeal and make it totally accessible, even to the most scientifically challenged reader. Consulting experts from Chicago's Field Museum and from the University of Minnesota, before, during, and after two trips he makes to Kenya's Tsavo National Park, Caputo immerses himself in their research, familiarizing the reader, in the process, with the lions, their behavior, and their controversies.

Far more apt to attack and eat humans than are the Serengeti plains lions, the man-eaters of Tsavo are giants, much longer from nose to tail, much taller at the shoulder, and 100 - 150 pounds heavier than the plains lions, and the males are often maneless. Caputo's experts strongly disagree on whether these giant lions differ simply because they have adapted to the hotter climate of Tsavo and their need to kill Cape buffalo for food, or whether, in fact, they represent a missing link between modern lions and the maneless cave lions of the Pleistocene era, which roamed throughout the Near East and Africa.

Stories of famous man-eaters of the past hundred years, including two which killed 135 people in 1898, and one 550-pounder from 1991, add drama and excitement to the narrative. But Caputo also ranges widely into peripheral, more personal subjects--why he believes hunters are closer to nature than are photographers, why tracking a lion on foot for four days is a more divine experience than using a vehicle, evolution vs. creationism, cloning, science vs. faith, and even his nightmares. Ultimately, the book is as much about Caputo as about the lions, who remain a mystery. "The truth is," he concludes, "I don't want to learn anything more about lions, but am content...to keep some blank spots blank; after all, those are what excite the imagination." Mary Whipple

Well done, both exciting and balanced.

Watch for The Ghosts of Tsavo to find a well-deserved spot on the best-seller lists. Caputo blends one bit travelogue with a splash of John McPhee, frappes it with some exciting writing, then serves it over the rocks of some hard scientific facts. This is a yarn, but a great one. The prologue is, hands down, the best story of someone hunting a man eating lion I have ever read. But this is not the "Jaguars Clawed My Flesh" school of big cat writing. His is a journey of exploration of the old school, similar to an expedition in the 19th Century from the Field Museum, which inspired Caputo as a child. Scientists will be happy to see he balances all of this with reason. Romantics will be happy to see he balances science with emotion. He has a gift, too, of beginning a personal rant on a point of politics and philosphy, and then doubling back on himself and to laugh at himself. He explores myths and explodes myths. Yet there is a romantic side to him that values them and the unknown. A good read, good reporting. Buy it, if the theme appeals to you at all, or if you ever looked up, as Caputo did as a child, at the great stuffed cats in museums.

Must reading for current and aspiring Christian leaders

Damazio has been able to take the word of God and much wisdom of experience and bring it together in this book. He presents the model of the Christian leader as one who has love, a servant's heart, who is committed to Christ and the Body of Christ. As one who has been in secondary leadership roles for most of my life, I have been able to see places where Christian leaders have failed, and how the wisdom in this book could have helped them avoid it. The attributes of leaders, good and bad are poigant, I have seen them played out many times. There is one area I question, his quick restoration of a fallen leader to LEADERSHIP as I have seen this cause a subsequent fall. This is not consistent with the other areas of the book and I wonder if he may have never had to deal with this first hand.
