Review

"The main purpose of this book is to introduce cinematography/ filmmaking as we practice it on a professional level. It includes the basic introduction to the essential concept of visual storytelling and more. Cinema is a language and within it the specific vocabularies and sublanguages of the lens, composition, visual design, lighting, image control, continuity, movement, and point-of-view. Learning these languages and vocabularies is a never-ending and a fascinating life-long study."--NeoPopRealism Journal

"A gorgeous piece of work that bids to become a classic text on cinematography....Few books on cinematography meld aesthetics and pragmatics as deftly as this one." --American Cinematographer

"The gorgeous illustrations bring movies to life, and the modern approach that incorporates digital as well as film means that this book can be used for years to come." --Judy Irola, ASC. Head of Cinematography, USC School of Cinematic Arts

"The book is a wonderful, well-organized and knowledgable collection of all information a cinematographer may need. I recommend it highly." --Andrew Laszlo, ASC

"This book shows that there is more to the DP than holding the light meter--he needs to understand so much more about using photography to tell a story, create a mood, evoke an emotion. No other text I know of stresses this to this extent." --Douglas C. Hart, First Camera Assistant, Instructor, and Author of The Camera Assistant

"Cinematography is a skillfully written guide to the technical craft and artistry of cinematography for today's cinematographers and directors. It presents each aspect of cinematography in precise language to help all filmmakers better understand the complexities with which the cinematographer engages during every moment of every shot.” -Michael Hofstein, Director of Photography

"Blain Brown's book is a necessity for anyone who is starting out or still working in the media acquisition industry.” -Don Lampasone, Producer/Editor/DP/VFX Artist (Austin, TX)

"[Cinematography] is a comprehensive, muscular, and authoritative guide to what cinematography means: [it] refreshingly addresses the why's with greater emphasis than the how's. A tourist's phrasebook and fluent speaker's aide memoire of the language and practice of making films.” -Phil South, Writer, Film and Creativity Coach (http://goingdownwriting.wordpress.com)

Horrible Lighting Examples
By Bluebell
I glanced through this book for a few minutes and immediately reboxed it to return it. The photographs he uses as example of good and bad lighting are awful. For instance, he has a man standing in glaring sunlight and explains how the hard light of the sun is too harsh. His solution? He puts the man under an awning, where he says the lighting is softer and more flattering. Maybe the light is softer under the awning, but also the IMAGE is softer, the color is greyed down, and there is little to no contrast. In the sunlit image, the man's skin is a beautiful rich chocolate brown and has definition and contrast, whereas in the "soft" image his skin is grey and blurs into the background.

The truth is that both solutions are wrong. All he really had to do for the sunlit photo was to flag or scrim the highlight off of the man's bald head, and bounce light into his eyes, which were going too dark, with a reflector. For the shot of the man under the awning, there needed to be bounced light (or even direct light) on the man's face to define it and give it some color, and a backlight to separate it from the background. But he doesn't suggest either of these solutions. Why? Is the art of lighting just to stick an actor somewhere and hope that the light looks good on their face? I don't recognize that sort of lighting as an "art." That's totally amateur. Any real D.P knows how to use his tools: lights, reflectors, bounce cards, flags, scrims, diffusion, etc. He doesn't just stick someone somewhere and hope for the best.

Another group of photos shows what the author claims is a shot that is correctly exposed, a shot that's underexposed, and a shot that's three stops overexposed. He also shows the negative for each of these types of exposures to the right of the photos. To my eye, the shot he claims is correctly exposed is about two stops underexposed, and the shot he claims is three stops overexposed is only one stop overexposed. The lighting on the two figures in the photo is uneven, and in the shot he claims is correctly exposed one of the people is going very dark, so that we are losing most of the detail in his face. In other words, only the highlights are correctly exposed. Then he makes the error of stating that the overexposed shot has a thick negative, "which is really hard to get a good print from." Well it's well-known that a thick negative gives you the best prints, which is why cinematographers used to overexpose negatives by two-thirds of a stop on purpose. So this is an obvious error. Plus, why is he using such an unevenly lit shot anyway? It's not as if one person was in shadow on purpose, for dramatic reasons. It's two people sitting down side-by side, but the actor on the shadow side has darker skin and is not filled in. So the lighting looks like an error too. There would actually be no way to expose this shot correctly for both of the actors.

I leafed through some more of the book, and saw more shots ranging from mediocre to awful that he he used to represent good lighting, and more bad solutions to cinematography problems, and I had had enough. I couldn't return it fast enough. If you want to learn how to light, read "Painting with Light" by John Alton.

Solid study on cinematography and serves as a baseline for what Directors and DP's need to know.
By Brock
Without getting into too much of a song and dance about how this book has impacted me, I feel it necessary to give a little background on myself in hopes of putting this book into better perspective for potential buyers. For the past year and a half I've decided to dedicate my life to pursuing a career in filmmaking. This has all been self-taught, reading 19 books, making multiple short films, corporate videos, working and making money in both my creative and business endeavors as a freelancer of sorts. I have read books on overall film production, directing, editing, making cinematic images, corporate videography, etc. I consider myself a Writer & Director, but I have also recently been doing work in cinematography. As a filmmaker you have to have a huge amount of respect for what goes into crafting the film image. This book gives a solid foundation for how important the cinematographer is, not only from a cinematographer perspective but also from an overall filmmaking perspective. So if you're likely in a similar position as me in trying to better yourself as a filmmaker, this book will undoubtedly be of use to you. If you're someone who wants to have a career solely as a cinematographer, you'll need this book in addition to the many more specialized books on lighting, camera operating, lenses, post-production color grading and correcting, etc to develop your abilities. So in conclusion, I highly recommend this book as a solid theory and practice-oriented look at the process of cinematography and the tools necessary to make cinematic images.

I loved it.
By Edith P Tower
It was so cheap and helped me so much in filmmaking. I loved it. Some sections of it were not as helpful as others, but in all its a really helpful resource.
I ordered this and a couple other filmmaking books. I liked this one the best. The "DSLR Cinema: Crafting the Film Look with Video" was not helpful AT ALL. The author just talked and talked about the gear and about philip bloom. It was also very misleading, and implied that you needed everything in the book to make a film, when all you really need is a camera and and idea.I've gotten more useful information from random videos on youtube than in that book, about both gear and filmmaking on a budget on DSLRS. This book actually talked about filmmaking, and wasn't just a useless catalog of photography gear.

You can tell from the other reviews that this is a great book. Buy it.

DSLR Cinema: Crafting the Film Look with Video - I found this not useful at all. For 20 bucks, it's very cheap, but it doesn't even come near the amount of useful information this has in it. It talks much more about the gear you'll need than actually using it. (if that made sense)

Anyways, this is a great book and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in filmmaking.

Exactly What I Expected From Terry Goodkind
By Lisa McGeen
The First Confessor (The Legend of Magda Searus) by Terry Goodkind is exactly what the title claims, the story of the Magda Searus, the first Confessor. The events played out here are a crucial part of the back story of the Sword of Truth series. As the story opens, Magda Searus has just lost her husband, First Wizard Baraccus. Feeling lost and alone, Magda sets out to commit suicide in the same manner as her husband, by throwing herself off the wall of the Keep and falling to her death a thousand feet below. At the last possible moment, she finds a note left by Baraccus, urging her to find truth. In the chapters that follow, the reader is given a closer look at the events laid out as backstory during the Sword of Truth series. How the war between the Old World and the New was first started, the making of the Sword of Truth, the hiding of the Temple of the Winds, the creation of the D'Haran bond, the dreamwalkers, the traitors in the Keep, and the reasoning behind the creation of the Confessors. And other events even further back in history are hinted at.

This was an excellent read. I've read each book by Goodkind in one sitting, and this was no exception. This book explains many of the secrets behind the Sword of Truth series and gives the characters mentioned in the series their own stories. Even though this wasn't about the main characters, Richard and Kahlan, I was just as interested in the characters and eager to know more about them. The only two problems I had with this book were that now I feel the need to go back and read the whole series again and now I want to know more about the other events mentioned in the series. Here's hoping Mr. Goodkind feels the urge to write more of the backstory.

A note about the format: The First Confessor (The Legend of Magda Searus) is a self-published e-book. Many of his loyal fans seem to be quite upset that it's only available in e-format, as they don't have the necessary e-readers. Terry Goodkind wanted to tell the story in his own way, without the limitations imposed by a publisher. Apparently, he's one of the first big name authors to venture into the realms of self-publishing. His reasons for doing so can be found on his website at terrygoodkind.com. As reviewers, we tend to shy away from author self-pubs. Many that we've read have had lots of grammatical errors, formatting issues, continuity problems, or just plain poor editing. I didn't find a single thing wrong in this book. That's not to say there aren't problems, just that I didn't find them, and I usually do. If you're leery of reading this because it's a self-pub, don't be. It could easily have been printed by any of the major publishers and I wouldn't have noticed any difference while reading it.

He's Back!
By Amazon Customer
I almost didn't buy this book. Although Terry Goodkind is one of my favorite authors I found his last couple books disappointing, so I started it with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. This book was impossible to put down. The story was fast moving, gripping and masterfully written. Mr. Goodkind will have you transported inside the Wizard's Keep while you are reading the story. I feel it is his best effort since Faith of the Fallen. It also gave we SOT series fans a better understanding of how the sword came to be and the creation of the Confessors. If this is an example of what he can do freed from the constraints of a publishing house then I hope the rest of his offerings come in the same format. I can't wait for his next book!

Read the original 11 Sword of Truth books first to avoid huge spoilers.
By Rich
I was looking at a Wikipedia article about the Sword of Truth series and I noted that the books are listed there according to the series' internal chronology. That puts this book first on the list because it's a prequel. I suspect, therefore, that some of these reviews may be read by people who are new to the Sword of Truth series, who are thinking about starting to read these books, and who want to see what other readers think before taking the plunge. I therefore feel it's crucial to admonish those people: DO NOT BEGIN WITH THIS BOOK. Read the original 11 books (starting with Wizard's First Rule and continuing through to Confessor) BEFORE you even CONSIDER reading this one. This book contains information that would constitute MASSIVE SPOILERS for the original series if you read this one first. Actually, simply putting the word "massive" in all caps doesn't really do it justice. I'm trying to think of a way to describe how important it is to avoid the spoilers and one example that comes to mind is how if you watched the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy before the original three movies, the "I am your father" plot twist in "The Empire Strikes Back" wouldn't contain any suspense at all. Remember how people wondered for three years whether Darth Vader was telling the truth? If you'd seen the prequels first, you'd already know the answer. But I'd argue that reading "The First Confessor" before the original Sword of Truth series would expose you to spoilers on a far greater level than you'd find in the Star Wars context. That's how important the backstory contained in this book is. You'd ruin huge portions of the story. Don't ruin it for yourself. Read the original series first and then you can read the four companion volumes (this one, Debt of Bones, The Omen Machine, and The Law of Nines) in any order you like.

With that said, I should comment on the book itself. The paragraph above makes it obvious that I've read all the books. I rate this one higher than Law of Nines and Omen Machine, but I don't rate it as highly as the earliest books in the original series (say, the first four books through Temple of the Winds). I appreciated the backstory to the original series and the book kept me reading to find out how the result would come about. That is, because it's a prequel I knew how the story had to end, but I wanted to know how it would reach that end. Last night I kept reading until just before 1:00 AM, to the point where my wife kicked me out of the bedroom so she could sleep with the lights out. That's how much I wanted to keep going.

I would have given this book four stars because I greatly enjoyed reading it, but I've taken a one-star deduction off my rating for two reasons. First, I think this book exhibits a style that unfortunately came to plague some of Terry Goodkind's work as the Sword of Truth series stretched on, and that style consists of too many long speeches. How best to explain this? Some writers tell you the story of the characters actually solving their problems and battling their nemeses. You see when the figurative lightbulb clicks on for them and you understand why. Terry Goodkind's work isn't like that these days. Instead, he tells you that the character saw what had to be done, but he doesn't tell you what has to be done or why. Instead, it happens (sometimes explained, sometimes not) and then the character gives a long oration explaining what he did and how he figured it out. It's almost like ex post facto explanation. That can be quite dissatisfying. Second, I think he's taken to letting the characters find the solutions too quickly. In the original Sword of Truth story arc, Mr. Goodkind put his characters through the wringer at times. He tortured them. They went through massive emotional agony. He doesn't seem to do that anymore and the characters are almost too good at quickly realizing the solutions to their problems. No doubt part of that is the shorter length of his newer books. This Kindle e-book didn't contain page numbers, so I can't compare its length to the original 11 books (all of which I have in paper format), but I tore through it far more quickly than I did any of the original books. It's inevitable that with a shorter book you have to resolve matters more quickly. But the quick resolution makes me feel like the characters' natural human flaws are glossed over or ignored. We all have foibles and flaws. It's human nature. It makes a story less plausible when characters' flaws don't hinder them in a meaningful way.

In sum, I enjoyed reading this book and I'd recommend it to anyone who read and enjoyed the main Sword of Truth story arc. But the book has flaws and I don't think I'd be giving a fair review if I ignored them. The flaws didn't prevent me from enjoying the book, but I think they did hinder the book from being as good as it could have been.

I don't even know where to begin to use this book. It is not helpful as I am struggling with this class. There is no solution manual to help me learn the problems either. We are not using it in class but my professor suggested we could work for practice. It may be useful as a fire starter.

The Parallel Programming Guide for Every Software Developer

From grids and clusters to next-generation game consoles, parallel computing is going mainstream. Innovations such as Hyper-Threading Technology, HyperTransport Technology, and multicore microprocessors from IBM, Intel, and Sun are accelerating the movement's growth. Only one thing is missing: programmers with the skills to meet the soaring demand for parallel software.

That's where Patterns for Parallel Programming comes in. It's the first parallel programming guide written specifically to serve working software developers, not just computer scientists. The authors introduce a complete, highly accessible pattern language that will help any experienced developer "think parallel"-and start writing effective parallel code almost immediately. Instead of formal theory, they deliver proven solutions to the challenges faced by parallel programmers, and pragmatic guidance for using today's parallel APIs in the real world. Coverage includes:

  • Understanding the parallel computing landscape and the challenges faced by parallel developers
  • Finding the concurrency in a software design problem and decomposing it into concurrent tasks
  • Managing the use of data across tasks
  • Creating an algorithm structure that effectively exploits the concurrency you've identified
  • Connecting your algorithmic structures to the APIs needed to implement them
  • Specific software constructs for implementing parallel programs
  • Working with today's leading parallel programming environments: OpenMP, MPI, and Java

Patterns have helped thousands of programmers master object-oriented development and other complex programming technologies. With this book, you will learn that they're the best way to master parallel programming too.

"If you build it, they will come."

And so we built them. Multiprocessor workstations, massively parallel supercomputers, a cluster in every department ... and they haven't come. Programmers haven't come to program these wonderful machines. Oh, a few programmers in love with the challenge have shown that most types of problems can be force-fit onto parallel computers, but general programmers, especially professional programmers who "have lives", ignore parallel computers. And they do so at their own peril. Parallel computers are going mainstream. Multithreaded microprocessors, multicore CPUs, multiprocessor PCs, clusters, parallel game consoles ... parallel computers are taking over the world of computing. The computer industry is ready to flood the market with hardware that will only run at full speed with parallel programs. But who will write these programs?

This is an old problem. Even in the early 1980s, when the "killer micros" started their assault on traditional vector supercomputers, we worried endlessly about how to attract normal programmers. We tried everything we could think of: high-level hardware abstractions, implicitly parallel programming languages, parallel language extensions, and portable message-passing libraries. But after many years of hard work, the fact of the matter is that "they" didn't come. The overwhelming majority of programmers will not invest the effort to write parallel software.

A common view is that you can't teach old programmers new tricks, so the problem will not be solved until the old programmers fade away and a new generation takes over.

But we don't buy into that defeatist attitude. Programmers have shown a remarkable ability to adopt new software technologies over the years. Look at how many old Fortran programmers are now writing elegant Java programs with sophisticated object-oriented designs. The problem isn't with old programmers. The problem is with old parallel computing experts and the way they've tried to create a pool of capable parallel programmers.

And that's where this book comes in. We want to capture the essence of how expert parallel programmers think about parallel algorithms and communicate that essential understanding in a way professional programmers can readily master. The technology we've adopted to accomplish this task is a pattern language. We made this choice not because we started the project as devotees of design patterns looking for a new field to conquer, but because patterns have been shown to work in ways that would be applicable in parallel programming. For example, patterns have been very effective in the field of object-oriented design. They have provided a common language experts can use to talk about the elements of design and have been extremely effective at helping programmers master object-oriented design.

This book contains our pattern language for parallel programming. The book opens with a couple of chapters to introduce the key concepts in parallel computing. These chapters focus on the parallel computing concepts and jargon used in the pattern language as opposed to being an exhaustive introduction to the field. The pattern language itself is presented in four parts corresponding to thefour phases of creating a parallel program:

Finding Concurrency . The programmer works in the problem domain to identify the available concurrency and expose it for use in the algorithm design.

Algorithm Structure . The programmer works with high-level structures for organizing a parallel algorithm.

Supporting Structures . We shift from algorithms to source code and consider how the parallel program will be organized and the techniques used to manage shared data.

Implementation Mechanisms . The final step is to look at specific software constructs for implementing a parallel program.

The patterns making up these four design spaces are tightly linked. You start at the top (Finding Concurrency), work through the patterns, and by the time you get to the bottom (Implementation Mechanisms), you will have a detailed design for your parallel program.

If the goal is a parallel program, however, you need more than just a parallel algorithm. You also need a programming environment and a notation for expressing the concurrency within the program's source code. Programmers used to be confronted by a large and confusing array of parallel programming environments. Fortunately, over the years the parallel programming community has converged around three programming environments.

OpenMP. A simple language extension to C, C++, or Fortran to write parallel programs for shared-memory computers.

MPI. A message-passing library used on clusters and other distributed-memory computers.

Java. An object-oriented programming language with language features supporting parallel programming on shared-memory computers and standard class libraries supporting distributed computing.

Many readers will already be familiar with one or more of these programming notations, but for readers completely new to parallel computing, we've included a discussion of these programming environments in the appendixes.

In closing, we have been working for many years on this pattern language. Presenting it as a book so people can start using it is an exciting development for us. But we don't see this as the end of this effort. We expect that others will have their own ideas about new and better patterns for parallel programming. We've assuredly missed some important features that really belong in this pattern language. We embrace change and look forward to engaging with the larger parallel computing community to iterate on this language. Over time, we'll update and improve the pattern language until it truly represents the consensus view of the parallel programming community. Then our real work will begin--using the pattern language to guide the creation of better parallel programming environments and helping people to use these technologies to write parallel software. We won't rest until the day sequential software is rare.

A good start
By wiredweird
Parallel programming has been around for years, in many different forms. It has usually been a specialty for supercomputing number crunchers and for the occasional OS geek. Now that traditional, single-processor solutions are hitting the wall, Moore's Law must grow in new directions: multithreaded processos, multi-cores, multi-processors, and wilder exotica. The hardware is entering the market now, and the software community is scrambling to develop the necessry skills for parallel program development. This book gives a fair introduction to a large range of the techniques available.

After getting the reader oriented to the basics of parallel programming, the authors lay out four "design spaces," or families of related patterns. Within each space, the authors present a handful of patterns using a common and reasonably familiar format: name, problem addressed, context, forces acting on the design, the solution, and examples of the pattern's usage. They identify spaces named Finding Concurrency, Algorithm Structure, Supporting Structures, and Implementation Mechanisms. Of course, these topics overlap to some extend, especially in the interplay of algorithm design and explitable parallelism, or in langauge and API primitives that blur support mechanisms available with the implemenation choices available to the programmer. The authors show how the pieces come together in familiar applications, including molecular dynamics and medical imaging applications. Appendices sketch the basic programming constructs available in three of the major parallelism toolkits around: OpenMP, MPI, and Java.

Although valuable, this book has a number of weaknesses. For example, they cite the Cooley-Tukey FFT algorithm as a winning example of "Divide and Conquer." It's a great example, but perhaps not the one most useful for didactic purposes. The FFT algortithm is brilliant, and based on deep insight combined with total fluency in handling combinations of trig functions. Programmers writing parallel code will always benefit in proportion to their understanding of the algorithms, but I would find it discouraging to think that mastery and creativity at Cooley and Tukey's level were requisite. The authors skip over the kinds of fine-grained parallelism and communication available in emerging platforms, such as FPGA- and GPU-based accelerators. At the opposite end of the spectrum, they also gloss over many of the management issues in grid computing, where parallelism is extremely coarse-grained. I also have reservations about some of the system primitives they identify as patterns - one may as well say that a "for" loop is a pattern, even though it's a primitive in nearly all programming languages.

Despite flaws, the authors do reasonably well at introducing a wide range of basics for writing parallel programs. The interested beginner will need a lot more information to put the ideas to use, but this is a fair start.

Good book for parallel computing
By Michael E.
This is an excellent introduction to parallel computing. It presents patterns for discovering what can be parallized, what data structures can be used, how to choose algorithms. Patterns are demonstrated by good examples showing benefits and trade-offs of different solutions. There is also a brief, but very useful introduction to common implementations: OpenMP, MPI, and regular procedural approach demonstrated with Java.

Some caution about what this book is not: this is not a general parallel programming designand patterns book (as I expected from the title). The focus of this book is parallel computing (i.e. scalable _calculations_, often scientific). There is somewhat more to parallel _programming_ than this book covers.

Still, I found this book very good and useful, even though I expected broader coverage.

A pretty decent guide to parallel programming
By Alexandros Gezerlis
"Patterns for Parallel Programming" (PPP) is the outcome of a collaboration between Timothy Mattson of Intel and Beverly Sanders & Berna Massingill (who are academic researchers). It introduces a pattern language for parallel programming, and uses OpenMP, MPI, and Java to flesh out the related patterns.

The Good: this volume discusses both shared-memory and distributed-memory programming, all between one set of covers. It also makes use of a general-purpose programming language and is therefore of interest both to computational scientists who are interested in clusters, and to programmers interested in multiprocessors (these days that covers pretty much everyone). More generally, PPP offers valuable advice to those interested in robust parallel software design. The authors cover a number of topics that are an essential part of parallel-programming lore (e.g. the 1D and 2D block-cyclic array distributions in Chapter 5). In other words, they codify existing knowledge, which is precisely what patterns are supposed to do. To accomplish this, they make effective use of a small number of examples (like molecular dynamics and the Mandelbrot set). That allows them to show a specific problem as approached both from different design spaces, and also from different patterns within one design space. This book follows in the footsteps of the illustrious volume "Design Patterns" by the Gang of Four (GoF). In chapters 3, 4, and 5, Mattson, Sanders, and Massingill introduce a number of patterns using a simplified version of the GoF template. Despite the structural similarities between the two books, PPP is more readable than the GoF volume. This is probably because it introduces a pattern language ("an organized way of navigating through a collection of design patterns to produce a design"), not just a collection of patterns. Essentially, the writing style is a linear combination of narrative and reference: it can be read cover-to-cover, or not. Finally, the three appendices contain introductory discussions of OpenMP, MPI, and concurrency in Java, respectively. They can be read either as the need arises, or before even starting the book: though limited in scope, they are pedagogically sound.

The Bad: despite being easier to read from start to finish than the GoF classic, this book is still constrained by its choice to catalog patterns. As a result, the recurring examples lead to repetition, since they have to be re-introduced in each example section. Also, given that the book was published in 2004, a few implementation-related topics are somewhat out-of-date (e.g., OpenMP 3.0 was not around at the time). Importantly, the book predates the recent explosion of interest in general-purpose GPU programming, so it doesn't mention, say, texture memory. However, more fundamental things like data decomposition, which the book does explain, are related to any parallel programming environment. On a different note, even though the book is generally readable, from time to time the authors resort to the "just look at the code and figure it out" technique: the best-known example is in chapter 4 when they discuss ghost cells and nonblocking communication. Furthermore, even though the authors have been for the most part clearheaded when naming the different patterns, I found their decision to call two distinct patterns "Data Sharing" and "Shared Data" (in the "Finding Concurrency" and "Supporting Structures" design spaces, respectively) quite confusing and therefore unfortunate. Also, the Glossary is very useful, in that it explains many terms either discussed in the text (e.g. "False sharing") or not (e.g. "Copy on write", "Eager evaluation"), but it is far from complete (e.g. "First touch", "Poison pill", and "Work stealing", though mentioned in the main text, are not included in the Glossary). Finally, I think the authors overstate the case when they claim that "the parallel programming community has converged around" Java: Pthreads would have been an equally (if not more) acceptable choice.

All in all, this book provides a good description of many aspects of parallel programming. Most other texts on parallel programming either are class textbooks or focus on a specific technology. In contradistinction to such books, "Patterns for parallel programming" strikes a happy medium between focusing on principles and discussing practical applications.

Not Exactly What I was expecting
By Michael Stevens
This is an Absolute Beginner's guide, but I was expecting a bit more. It walks you through changing an existing template. I wish it would have been given ground up training. It doesn't even make a very good reference guide as it is so specific to the one template design it is showing you. I ended up using Lynda.com which has a few very good beginner tutorials on how to design a ground FileMaker app.
