The French call them 'the Dark Years'...

This definitive new history of Occupied France explores the myths and realities of four of the most divisive years in French history.

Taking in ordinary people's experiences of defeat, collaboration, resistance, and liberation, it uncovers the conflicting memories of occupation which ensure that even today France continues to debate the legacy of the Vichy years.

From Publishers Weekly
eople from other Allied countries joke that, according to the French, every one of them participated in the resistance to German occupation during WWII. Jackson, a professor of history at the University of Wales-Swansea, spares no one in exploring not only the events of wartime France, but also developments in historical perspectives on the collaborationist Vichy regime and the Resistance. Moreover, he looks forward to future revelations. Between these endpoints lies a convoluted landscape bearing little resemblance to the usual simplistic pictures. Jackson's excellent study is timely those who remember the occupation will not be around us much longer. It has been a generation since the last general history of occupied France, and during that time, scholars have done much research on which Jackson draws. Beginning his history with the formation of the politics and society of the Third Republic, he exposes France's past in all its contradictions and complexities: the Resistance forces' diverse membership, including women, Jews, farm workers and foreigners; the latent forces in French government and culture that allowed for an easy transition to the Vichy government; Marshal P‚tain's increasing popularity while support for Vichy flagged. In liberated Paris, de Gaulle alleged that the French Republic "never ceased to exist" during occupation. "According to this reinterpretation," writes Jackson, "most of the horrors inflicted on France had been the work of the Germans alone." This insightful, thoroughly researched book will be of interest to scholars and general readers, who will come away with a profound understanding of a crucial time in French history. Jackson does readers a service, for at least another generation. 3 maps.

From Library Journal
In this detailed analysis of an era that still haunts French society, Jackson (history, Univ. of Wales, Swansea; The Popular Front in France) asserts that the Vichy government was not an aberration grafted onto the French body politic by the conquering Germans. The repressive government that was established in that small southern French resort town was the expression of ideological currents that encompassed the anti-Semitic fascist convictions of several French political factions. The author is also quick to point out that the fractious Resistance movement was also a product of indigenous political convictions that reached back to the Declaration of the Rights of Man. Jackson thoroughly dissects the multilayered complexities of a nation at war with itself and shows how, in the final analysis, it was the persevering spirit of the average French citizen that prevailed during those "dark years." Jackson's reputation for meticulous scholarship is quite evident in this latest work, which supplants J.P. Azema's From Munich to Liberation 1938-1944 (Cambridge Univ. o.p.) as the definitive study on the Occupation years and should be in every French history collection. Review

"Jackson has synthesized a wealth of secondary works in an account that is thorough, thoughtful, lucid, and awesomely commodious."--Eugen Weber,The Atlantic Monthly

"This book is an exhaustive synthesis of scholarly research, memoirs and diaries....What makes Jackson's account particularly useful is that it traces both the prewar roots of wartime developments and the postwar reverberations-- the trials, purges, films and novels. Vichy and the resistance thus emerge clearly as part of the longer run of French history....This book bears impressive testimony to the depth of France's postwar conversation with itself about what it endured during the war,"--The New York Times Book Review

"This insightful, thoroughly researched book will be of interest to scholars and general readers, who will come away with a profound understanding of a crucial time in French history"--Publishers Weekly

"In the most complete and careful history to date of occupied France, Jackson unflinchingly explores the complexities and moral ambiguities of his subject."--The Atlantic Monthly

a lot too complicated
By David L. Martenson
the facts are very interesting and it is complete. that said, however, it is too intricate with names and groups for the general public. It is slow reading. I would have preferred the author not assuming the reader knows the persons he refers to in his book. While it is very complete, i am still looking for a more interesting book about these years.

Definitive World War II History on Nazi-Occupied France
By John Kwok
Julian Jackson's history is the most distinguished account I've read on France during the period from 1940 through 1944. He makes an excellent case noting how the Vichy Regime was indeed part of a longstanding political tradition in France which went as far back as the Ancien Regime; he makes a similar observation of the Resistance, noting how its political philosophy could be traced directly back to the French Revolution. Jackson clearly notes the intense dislike - if not outright hatred - of many French towards their German occupiers, noting that such sentiments may have played a decisive part in ensuring the survival of more French Jews than their counterparts in other Nazi-occupied countries. Much to my surprise, he clearly demonstrates how support for the Vichy Regime came not only from a staunchly conservative elements - but also liberal, and indeed socialist elements - within French society. He also succeeds in noting how figures such as French resistance leader Jean Moulin and future French president Francois Mitterand underwent transformations - some major, but also minor - in their politics, eventually shifting their support from the Vichy regime to DeGaulle's Free French movement. Despite Vichy's reputation for cultural as well as political repression, Jackson shows that cultural activities ranging from the fine arts through film not only survived, but also flourished, at least during the early history of the Vichy Regime.

This book supports "New Trading Dimensions". I use it for developing my understanding of 'NTD', but it has a useful presentation discussing Elliot waves and the relationship of volume with the day's trading range.

The book has the wrong title!
By Amazon Customer
I was greatly disappointed with this book. One would think it is about chaos theory and its applications for the financial markets, but all it has on the subject is one page of text! When I read the book, I had a strong feeling that the author didn't know what he was talking about when it came to chaos, and that's why he had so little to say. If you really want to get familiar with chaos theory and how it can help analyze the markets, your best bet is Peters' "Chaos and Order in the Financial Markets". Better yet, if you have some mathematical background, "Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics in the Financial Markets" by R.Trippi offers some serious discussion on the subject.

A beautiful world guide to the brown bean.

Taking the reader on a global tour of coffee-growing countries, The World Atlas of Coffee presents the bean in full-color photographs and concise, informative text. It shows the origins of coffee -- where it is grown, the people who grow it; and the cultures in which coffee is a way of life -- and the world of consumption -- processing, grades, the consumer and the modern culture of coffee.

Plants of the genus Coffea are cultivated in more than 70 countries but primarily in equatorial Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa. For some countries, including Central African Republic, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Honduras, coffee is the number one export and critical to the economy.

Organized by continent and then further by country or region, The World Atlas of Coffee presents the brew in color spreads packed with information. They include:

  • The history of coffee generally and regionally
  • The role of colonialism (for example, in Burundi under colonial rule of Belgium, coffee production was best described as coercive. Every peasant farmer had to cultivate at least 50 coffee trees near their home.)
  • Map of growing regions and detail maps
  • Charts explaining differences in growing regions within a country
  • Inset boxes (For example, what is the Potato Defect? Is Cuban coffee legal in the United States?)
  • The politics of coffee and the fair trade, organic and shade grown phenomena
  • Beautiful color photographs taken in the field.
  • Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee per day, equivalent to 146 billion cups of coffee per year, making the United States the leading consumer of coffee in the world. The World Atlas of Coffee is an excellent choice for these coffee lovers.

For the coffee geek if you don't know the difference between the coffee varieties Arabica and Robusta, if you're wondering how coffee cultivation in Ethiopia differs from that in Costa Rica, if you're confused about the myriad methods of brewing coffee, you won't find a better resource than "The World Atlas of Coffee: From Beans to Brewing--Coffees Explored, Explained and Enjoyed". Even confirmed coffee geeks will benefit from this volume, at once encyclopedic and approachable. (Erica Marcus The Tampa Bay Ledger 2014-12-30)

Professionals and enthusiasts alike will love this beautiful book by James Hoffmann. From overviews of the world's most vibrant coffee-growing regions, to step-by-step brewing tutorials, the content is educational, thought-provoking, and substantial. I've already recommended this book to Barista Magazine readers countless times. (Sarah Allen, Editor Barista Magazine 2015-07-01)

Nothing like a good cup of coffee! Coffee tasting bars are springing up everywhere along with coffee tourism--learn where it comes from and why it tastes a certain way. This last word on coffee provides maps, beautiful photography, taste profiles and great new ways to enjoy coffee! Aficionados will enjoy reading this along with their morning "shot"! (Ann Coombs Annual Holiday Gift Guide List 2015-12-01)

The World Atlas of Coffee...takes ambitious as its starting point and then shoots for exhaustive. It doesn't hit that crazy a level of detail, which is lucky for us because it remains at once packed and approachable. Just one example: in the section on Burundi, Hoffmann details fourteen growing regions. It's a book coffee professionals and enthusiasts alike should not just add to their libraries but dog-ear and highlight. Opening with the history, production, retail, and brewing of coffee, Hoffmann spends more than a hundred pages at origin, giving special attention to traceability. Designed with gorgeous photography and an eye to draw readers through the sometimes bewildering process of brewing a simple cup of coffee, The World Atlas of Coffee is a book you'll spend as much time looking at as reading. (Cory Eldridge Fresh Cup Magazine 2014-11-05)

For those interested in all-things java, author Hoffmann -- a world-champion barista and CEO of a British roasting company -- has written the definitive guide. If you love coffee, then you'll love this book. Hoffman focuses on specialty coffees: those "defined by their quality and by how good they taste" and discusses in fascinating detail how different varieties of coffee produce their own unique flavors, aromas, and commercial value. The book is divided into three beautifully illustrated sections that cover the process of growing and processing coffee, the numerous ways to grind, roast, and brew it, and the geographical and historical origins of the many types of drinkable black gold. Readers will find a bevy of informative tidbits throughout the book. For example, American G.I.s created Americano by watering down Italian espresso... The book's design also warrants praise: it's loaded with hundreds of full color photographs, maps, and illustrations. It is well-written, informative,
and a must-have for general readers who want to know more about their favorite morning brew. (Publishers Weekly 2014-11-17)

One of the world's favorite beverages is dissected in this encyclopedia that introduces the coffee plant and its harvesting, processing, and trade and discusses the buying and preparation of the drink before embarking on a world coffee tour. This voyage takes up most of the title and includes information on the history and current state of coffee growing, processing, and consumption in sections on Africa, Asia, and the Americas. A strength of the book are the numerous, often full-spread photos, of coffee at every stage from fruit to cup. An unusual offering that will be of value in collections serving agriculture, business, and nutrition students. (Henrietta Verma Library Journal 2014-12-01)

This single-volume "all you want to know about coffee"book fills a gap in the popular reference literature. Though the title uses the more academic word atlas, this is actually a readable work on coffee, albeit arranged by continent and then by region. It seeks to provide information on where coffee is grown, the people who grow it, and the coffee culture at large. The book begins with an introduction to coffee and the process of getting from the bean to the cup. The atlas portion contains 30 pages covering Africa; 22 pages, Asia; and 68 pages, the Americas. As seen in other Firefly books, it is profusely illustrated with color plates. Recommended for circulating collections at libraries where interest in coffee is high. (Jerry Carbone Booklist 2014-12-15)

    Made My Coffee Snob Happy
    By K. Groh
My husband is not only the most difficult person to buy a present for but also a huge coffee snob. You've heard the song, "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover," my husband has 50 ways to brew coffee. Cold press, press pot, drip, brew, etc. And he's tried a ton of coffees as well. He times things, checks the temperature of the water and has also used water from our well before it goes through any filtration or softening. So I was thrilled when I got this book and not only did he not ask to return it (yes, almost every present I get him) but he has said how much he loves this. He said it is very comprehensive and it covers so much from the bean to the roast, coffee brewing methods, etc. So I guess I win this one. Finally, after 20 years.

This is one of the best overall introductions to coffee that I have read. I recommend this with the https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Bottle-Craft-Coffee-Roasting/dp/1607741180/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477242795&sr=8-1&keywords=blue+bottle+craft+of+coffee Blue Bottle book.
This is not a barista's guide book though it does have some information one should know if that is your profession.
I enjoy the beverage. I am no expert. I merely wanted to learn more about the plant and the product. The pictures are very nice as well.

Good info, too many plugs for his other books
    By Cynthia R.
There is tons of good information in this book, however I am baffled at the motives of the author(s) constantly referring/referencing/footnoting their own previously written books. In almost every chapter he refers to himself and co-authors in the third person ("As Ken Blanchard writes in ___ book".) It is very distracting to me and I can't determine if it is a shameless plug to sell you his other works or if it is some attempt at lending credibility to his point. If he wrote the previous book as an original idea, then he has no need to reference or quote himself. He makes excellent, thought-provoking points, but as Cynthia R. states in her book review, "Good info, too many plugs for his other books." (see how annoying that is)

Rebellion: The History of England from James I to the Glorious Revolution, by Peter Ackroyd

Peter Ackroyd has been praised as one of the greatest living chroniclers of Britain and its people. In Rebellion, he continues his dazzling account of the history of England, beginning with the progress south of the Scottish king, James VI, who on the death of Elizabeth I became the first Stuart king of England, and ending with the deposition and flight into exile of his grandson, James II.

The Stuart monarchy brought together the two nations of England and Scotland into one realm, albeit a realm still marked by political divisions that echo to this day. More importantly, perhaps, the Stuart era was marked by the cruel depredations of civil war, and the killing of a king. Shrewd and opinionated, James I was eloquent on matters as diverse as theology, witchcraft, and the abuses of tobacco, but his attitude to the English parliament sowed the seeds of the division that would split the country during the reign of his hapless heir, Charles I. Ackroyd offers a brilliant, warts-and-all portrayal of Charles's nemesis, Oliver Cromwell, Parliament's great military leader and England's only dictator, who began his career as a political liberator but ended it as much of a despot as "that man of blood," the king he executed.

England's turbulent seventeenth century is vividly laid out before us, but so too is the cultural and social life of the period, notable for its extraordinarily rich literature, including Shakespeare's late masterpieces, Jacobean tragedy, the poetry of John Donne and Milton and Thomas Hobbes's great philosophical treatise, Leviathan. In addition to its account of England's royalty, Rebellion also gives us a very real sense of the lives of ordinary English men and women, lived out against a backdrop of constant disruption and uncertainty.

    Review

“Splendid . . . Ackroyd keeps things moving briskly along by alternating between weighty matters of state and vignettes of everyday life. An accomplished novelist, he has an eye for the revelatory digression.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“An exhilarating experience. Readers will come away from this book with an appreciation of how and why the cataclysmic events of seventeenth century England shaped world history for the next two centuries.” ―NPR.org

“Appropriately detailed, beautifully written story of the Stuarts' rise and fall - will leave readers clamoring for the further adventures awaiting England in the 18th century.” ―Kirkus (starred review)

“Ackroyd is a wonderful storyteller, and he has a wonderful and vitally important story to tell... providing excellent insights into the character and motivations of several of the prime movers of events... He eloquently describes the development of literature, the ongoing religious controversies, and the evolving political sympathies and their effects on the lives and opinions of ordinary citizens.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“The depth and scope of Ackroyd's account is impressive, and it is as accessible as it is rich.” ―Publishers Weekly

“In the same vein as the previous two volumes, Rebellion does more than lay out the facts of history. Spliced between the chapters that move the chronological history forward are vignettes on daily life in 17th-century England, covering the theatres, literature, politics and economics, and the emerging popular press, as well as contemporary analysis of historical events. This is a fascinating look at life in England during tumultuous times.” ―Shelf Awareness

    England, wealthy and wanton
    By Kindle Customer
Atmospherics is what Peter Ackroyd does best. And he does it so well.

In all his histories but especially in “Rebellion,” Ackroyd paints a vivid portrait that manages to come alive with the sights, smells and sounds of the period, in this book Jacobean England.

How's this for verisimilitude: Ackroyd recounts the famous diarist of the period Samuel Pepys sitting down to a dinner of “marrow bones and a leg of mutton, a loin of veal and a dish of fowl together with two dozen larks.” Offered a serving of fish, Ackroyd tells us that Pepys declined and recorded later in his diary that the sturgeon seemed to be “creeping” with “many little worms, which I suppose was through the staleness of the pickle.”

“Rebellion” is the latest installment in the author’s multi-volume chronicle of Great Britain and it’s a big, bouncy slice of British history. He is constantly peppering this part of the massive chronicle with smallish, memorable details such as the description by a member of court of the newly enthroned James I as being someone who was a “robust” and “fluent conversationalist” but also a king who seemed to be “forever fiddling” with his codpiece.

From the death of Elizabeth I in 1603 and ascension of James I to the removal of his grandson James II in 1688 the book gives us the story of the House of Stuart. James I was the son of Mary Queen of Scots and as the monarch to usher Britain into the 17th century, James unified England and Scotland, no small achievement.

The century was in many ways a prosperous one for Britain. It was also fractious and turbulent. The Stuart century saw the execution of a king, Cromwell’s rise and fall and the bloody civil war that became the blot on the dictator’s legacy. Ackroyd closes the book on this chapter in English history with downfall of James II.

History is usually written from the perspective of the royals, the class in power and the elite, those who rule. Ackroyd does something more democratic and inclusive. He depicts the leaders and their influence and foibles. But he also portrays what life was like and gives full representation to the not-so-exalted, the men and women who lived out a way of life mostly imposed upon them. And if for no other reason, Ackroyd’s careful rendering of ordinary life earns “Rebellion” a spot up near the top of your booklist . . . and hungry with anticipation for what life’s promise will be in England in the 18th Century.

Excellent History of the Stuart Dynasty
    By Paul
The turbulent 17th century in England required a strong king and a leader of men. The four descendants of Mary Queen of Scots proved to have none of that in them. It is ironic that Mary lost her head to Elizabeth, but her son became king after Elizabeth's death.

James I was not a Hollywood image of a king. He was a man prone to slobbering, and "playing with his codpiece". Coming from Scotland, and the only child of Mary Queen of Scots, he brought much of that baggage with him, and with all four of these monarchs, he fought continuously for money that was not readily offered for his fine tastes. The one thing he is most remembered for was the creation of the King James Bible. That in itself is a most interesting story, and the author could have presented much more information on this.

His son Charles assumed the throne on the death of his father. Charles was a man of stubborn will, who thought way too much of himself, and foolishly aligned his throne with people not at all popular, such as the Duke of Buckingham. He had a running battle with a Parliament that increasingly sought to strip him of real power. It was so bad that Charles dissolved Parliament in 1629 for a long eleven years. It was only in April of 1640 that it was again summoned because the king needed money and the reception to this was not friendly. There was also great religious conflicts at this time. The dour Presbyterian Scots demanded no toleration of Catholicism and no acceptance of the more formal Church of England which infuriated Charles. To shorten the story, royalists and backers of parliament gathered armies. Charles I eventually was defeated and at the end of January 1649, his head was chopped off. For a period of time Oliver Cromwell assumed more of a military dictatorship, and eventually, they sent for Charles II, who had been living in Europe to assume the throne. He did and proved to be just as incompetent as his father and grandfather. With his death and no male heir, his brother James II took the crown and by 1688, he was toppled in the Glorious Revolution. It didn't help that James was Catholic which was a clear conflict with the majority of the people and those in power.

There are many other good parts of the book. The author brings up information on the arts, the way people lived, and toward the latter part of the 17th century, the economic progress of England in so many ways that brought not only wealth, but general improvements in life for the English people.

The book is very readable with generally short chapters that keep you moving along. There is a much going on during this period and Ackroyd does most of it justice in a fair manner. It could easily be four volumes or more, but nobody would read it, so I recommend it. Even if you have limited background in the history of this period, you will gain knowledge from this work and I thank the author for it.

    What about the Boyne?
    By Thomas Maloney
I enjoyed this; good detail, and it moved along quickly. However - the ending was inconclusive. The reign of James II (or, at least, the story of his monarchy) should include some mention of the fighting in Ireland that concluded with the Battle of the Boyne. Given that James' defeat in Ireland established the outline of Irish history for 300 years, and represented the completion of William of Orange's campaign, some mention should be made.
