About the Author
Jaideep Hardikar is a Nagpur-based journalist, currently working with the Telegraph as the central India correspondent. He began his reporting career with Lokmat Times in April 1997 and has subsequently worked with the Hitavada and DNA, Mumbai. He has won several fellowships and awards, including the Sanskriti Award for young journalists in 2003 for his reportage on rural issues. In 2009, he travelled to the United States of America under the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship programme and worked with Sun Sentinel in South Florida. For more than a decade, Hardikar has reported extensively from Vidarbha on farmer suicides and the cotton crisis. This book was born of his travels under the K.K. Birla Foundation Media Fellowship in 2001.

"Development" is just the opposite

A Village Awaits Doomsday is an aptly titled and powerful book about the ruination of lives by the process that many of us know as "development." While for some, the positivist idea of development is an unfettered "good," for those who have to give up land, livelihood, and often life in the name of grand projects, the picture is far bleaker. Hardikar's book outlines real cases of displacement, loss of life, and environmental despoliation at the hands of mega-projects.

Mind you, Hardikar is not a reflexive anti-development person; instead the book discusses what really happens on the ground and offers lessons on how to enact sustainable and humane development, that actually helps those it purports to.

Anyone interested in modern India should read this book.

Great Q&A On Outer Space

I love to ponder the mysteries of outer space, from planetary factoids to quasar theories. This book is chock full of all this and everything in between. The Q&A are taken from a monthly astronomy magazine and written from the perspective of "Merlin" who is from the Andromeda galaxy. Merlin offers a fun and lively way to discover outer space. I consider this book to be a nice, light read for all ages.

We have recently been inundated by a spate of books on the "science-religion" controversy. They all confuse science with reductionist materialism and religion with fundamentalism. Elvidge's book is one of the notable exceptions. Unfortunately, none of the exceptions are receiving the attention of the rich publishers or the mainstream media. This is all in keeping with the modern cultural trend towards oversimplification of every issue. About the Author
Jim Elvidge holds a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University. He has applied his training in the high-tech world as a leader in technology and enterprise management, including many years in executive roles for various companies and entrepreneurial ventures. He also holds 4 patents in digital signal processing.

Beyond the high-tech realm, however, Elvidge has years of experience as a musician, writer, and truth seeker. He merged his technology skills with his love of music, developed one of the first PC-based digital music samplers, and co-founded RadioAMP, the first private-label online streaming-radio company.

For many years, Elvidge has kept pace with the latest research, theories, and discoveries in the varied fields of subatomic physics, cosmology, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and the paranormal. This unique knowledge base has provided the foundation for his first full-length book, The Universe-Solved! .

Solved??? Well not quite.

"Many" of us have pondered by now whether we might be living in a virtual reality. But few people take this option seriously. Jim Elvidge does, and so do I. His book is the first ever, I think, devoted solely to this topic--one that has preoccupied me for most of my life. I read it in one sitting. It's an excellent start.
His arguments are roughly as follows. 1)Virtual reality simulations are technically feasible. 2) Virtual reality fits well with physical observations of our reality (e.g. the discontinuous nature of space and time) 3) Virtual reality would explain some knotty problems associated with our reality (the paradoxes of quantum mechanics, fine tuning, and the big bang among others) 4) V. R. also explains a variety of "anomalies" in our lives . These include things paranormal, out of body and near death experiences, UFO's , altered mind states, and unbelievable coincidences. Elvidge devotes a lot of space to this area and has come up with some good examples but these rarely experienced and poorly documented events, which I have never encountered personally, do not work for me.
The beauty and the problem with virtual reality is that it explains almost anything - from the cosmic to the trivial -quantum entanglement at a distance, Elvis sightings, cornflakes that look like Jesus, Jesus. Invoking V.R. to solve the universe is akin to a novelist extracting his hero from an impossible pickle by having him wake from a dream.
We really need stronger evidence. Our unlikely place in civilization's time line is one item that Elvidge gives some attention. But what else? A student probably spoke for the masses when she observed that if she is living in a virtual reality "the graphics are great, but the plot sucks." In comparison to what is possible I suspect that even the graphics are only so so . But what about the plot? Why do so many bad things happen to good people and vice versa? Who would do this to us and why? Elvidge just barely touches on this in his last chapter. And the rest of the evidence? It's out there, but not in this book.

Are We Living in a Programmed Reality?

In August 2003, I attended a conference in Oxford, England, at which the eminent physics professor, Dr. Michio Kaku, was speaking. I had previously read a paper by Dr. Nick Bostrom who had recently migrated from the U.S. to teach at Oxford. The paper, entitled "Are You Living In a Computer Simulation", appeared in May 2001 when Bostrom was still in the Philosophy Department at Yale.

Before leaving the States, I set up a lunch between these two academicians, because I wanted Dr. Kaku to be exposed to Dr. Bostrom's thinking. It worked out well, and I treated Kaku, his wife, and Bostrom to lunch at a small restaurant across the street from the Oxford Union. I was pretty sure Kaku had not read Bostrom's paper, and I was right.

Midway through the first course, I asked Dr. Bostrom to briefly explain to Dr. Kaku what he had written. He did, and, by the middle of the main course, I asked Kaku what he thought of the possibility of Bostrom's theory "holding water." He politely gave his reasons why he didn't think it was possible, stressing the improbability of being able to program all of history as we know it. The amount of variables, he said, would be so large the chances were almost zero.

We went back and forth, Bostrom repeating his thesis, I trying to convince Kaku that it could be true. Both "stuck to their guns."

Finally, during dessert, I said, "You know, it might be like the series of movies called The Matrix." Dr. Kaku was silent for a minute and then said he'd have to think more about it. And that's where the conversation ended.

In January of 2005, Michio Kaku's book Parallel Worlds - A Journey Through Creation, Higher Dimensions, and the Future of the Cosmos appeared. In it were two pages devoted to The Matrix at the beginning of a section called "Is the Universe a Computer Program?"

He stated in a brief conclusion, "...it is exceedingly difficult for a Newtonian world to be reduced to a computer program, since there are too many variables.... But in the quantum world, strange things happen." I felt vindicated, but while I knew in my gut there was some truth to the idea, the details of such speculation remained up in the air for me.

On the evening of November 29, 2010, Jim Elvidge appeared as a guest on the international radio program Coast to Coast AM. I hadn't listened to the show in some time, but decided to stream it on my computer the next morning.

Lo and behold, Elvidge had written the book The Universe - Solved published in 2007 in which he asks the question, "Are we living in a programmed reality?" Bostrom and Kaku are both mentioned in the book. HOW DID I MISS IT?!

Well, I've got to tell you, it puts the story together in a very understandable way. Elvidge, trained as an electrical engineer, spends most of the book leading up to his conclusion in Chapter 7, but it's well worth the wait.

By explaining up front the latest expert thinking about such things as quantum entanglement, parallel universes, living in a hologram, alternate realities, computer coding, and virtual reality, he gives the reader the necessary background to understand the premise of his argument. And he treats these most complex subjects in such a way that even the least technical of minds should be able to understand them.

The book is loaded with simple but meaningful illustrations, charts, and quotes from others that add to its being "reader friendly".

I found it refreshing, for instance, to be given very concise but easily comprehensible descriptions of string theory and M-theory, quantum foam, multiple dimensions, the possibilities of teleportation, nanotechnology, altered states of consciousness, simulators and games, the big bang theory and the fine tuning of our universe.

With examples of anomalies like UFO's, "little green men", synchronistic coincidences, cases of cryptozoology, the 100th Monkey theory, and our "seemingly" endless supply of oil, we know Elvidge is leading up to the reason all these strange occurances might be possible.

He even references our increasing fascination with movies like The Truman Show to illustrate his point. And, he does this with a good sense of humor that makes for light reading....something necessary when treating these most complex of issues.

So, with all this background, his leap in Chapter 7, entitled "Are we Living in a Programmed Reality?", very well accounts for the anomalies and theories of physics into which he has given us such a clear insight in the previous chapters.

The existence of the Planck length and time, the absolutely smallest quantities of measurement according to physics, means that physical reality is not continuous. It is quantized into very, very small parts. This, then, challenges Kaku's argument that the number of variables would be too vast to make possible Bostrom's computer simulated universe. Provided there was a computer powerful enough to deal with a very large but less than infinite amount of variables, simulated reality is certainly a possibility.

Chapters 8 and 9 then go on to clarify Elvidge's thinking in dealing with how to physically program a reality. The only thing I found lacking was an index at the end of the book, which should be added if it's ever reprinted.

This, folks, is exciting, leading edge thinking, and I highly recommend you go to Elvidge's website, [...], for more information and to order the book. If you want a glimpse of what might actually be going on in our so-called "reality", you can't do any better. I think it will, to say the least, astound you as it did me, and open your mind to a whole new insight worthy of your further investigation.

The Universe - Solved!
FINALLY, a book that will do more than just pose questions and present hypotheses! All that is needed to digest this fine melange of the scientific and metaphysical is an open mind. Elvidge presents his own mix in grand style building upon and crumbling to pieces the time-worn yawns of "why are we here" and "is there more than this". He draws from every angle of the the "known"- from Hollywood and dreams to particle physics and nanotechnology to the cosmos; all laid upon a finely diced bed of humor and pop-culture reference- for a mind-expanding, door-opening, myth-blasting journey that puts words to that "niggling sensation" of our own concepts of reality. Some if it may be a bit disconcerting or just a bit humbling but this book is sure to make a huge impact on many fronts. It is a must-read for anyone who has ever posed the question of existence.

Elvidge knows his stuff- behind the droll humor is good pure science and research. To imagine is to create- and whose creations are we? And in which game are we the players? Our consciousness, our being, our "stuff" and our perceptions are all put into another perspective, layer upon layer.
This book is guaranteed to make you think outside of any box that you could ever imagine!

About the Author
The late Azriel Rosenfeld was a tenured research professor, a distinguished university professor, and the Founding Director of the Center for Automation Research at the University of Maryland in College Park, where he also held affiliate professorships in the departments of computer science, electrical engineering, and psychology. Dr. Rosenfeld was widely regarded as the leading researcher in the world in the field of computer image analysis. Over a period of nearly 40 years, he made fundamental and pioneering contributions to nearly every area of that field. He wrote the first textbook in the field, was founding editor of its first journal, and was co-chairman of its first international conference. He published over 30 books and over 600 book chapters and journal articles, and directed nearly 60 Ph.D. dissertations. Dr. Rosenfeld's research on digital image analysis—specifically on digital geometry and topology and the accurate measurement of statistical features of digital images in the 1960s and 1970s—formed the foundation for a generation of industrial vision inspection systems that have found widespread applications from the automotive to the electronics industry. He was a Fellow of the IEEE and the Washington Academy of Sciences; a Founding Fellow of the AAAI, the ACM, and the IAPR. Among his numerous awards and honors are the IEEE's Emanuel Piore Award, its Third Millennium Medal, and its Distinguished Service Award for Lifetime Achievement in Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition.

This is a historic book which helped define the field of image processing. It has clarity and it presents the basic issues in a superb manner. Although it is somewhat dated now, it will still be useful to those who wish to look at the historical development of the field.

About the Author
Professor Brian R. Little is an internationally acclaimed scholar and speaker in the field of personality and motivational psychology. He is a fellow of the Well-being Institute at Cambridge University, where he also lectures in the Department of Psychology and the Cambridge Judge Business School. Read, laugh, pause, think - Me, Myself, And Us has it all

Let me preface this review with a cautionary note: I'm a doctoral student in behavioral science, I have read about personality psychology extensively and have interacted with Dr. Little in person a few times.

Me, Myself, And Us is a fantastic book. Dr. Little has us laughing, thinking, reflecting, questioning, and at the same time learning learning and learning about ourselves, our friends, our foes, and anyone else we care to put within our personal radar. Throughout the book, the common theme of questioning how people behave, why they behave how they behave, and what we can do about it, is as helpful a guide as any that has ever been written about the subject.

My favourite quote of the book, that I have since started using in every day usage, is the idea of "acting out of character", which Dr. Little uses to illustrate one of his key theories. In short, acting out of character has a dual meaning; on the one hand, it describes situations where we act in ways that run contrary to our biological make-up and our sociological/cultural up-bringing; at the same time, acting out of character can also describe situations where we act because of our character, because of what we believe in, and because of things that are important for us. Acting out of character therefore describes situations where introverts act like extroverts, where selfish people act kind, or where social butterflies act more calm. Crucially, we can not act out of character all the time, but need spaces where we can be in-tune with our character again, which Dr. Little calls "restorative niches" to maintain levels of well-being.

For anyone interested in the self, whether it's their own or other peoples', I can only wholeheartedly recommend reading Dr. Little's book, which I would call his magnum opus (to date). It's a very accessible, smart, and funny read, that will have you pause at times to reflect and think.

The 2015 book of the year on Personality

Review of Me, Myself, and Us: The Science of Personality and the Art of Well-Being by Brian R. Little

About once a year you read a book that both confirms your beliefs and introduces you to new ways of thinking. Me, Myself, and Us is the book for 2015. It is a pleasure to read a book that is clearly written and humorous yet full of insights. Thankfully it gives neuroplasticity a miss and tries to explain how you can have a happy life without morphing into a sermon on new-age spirituality. Instead Little takes as his mantra that happiness is derived by understanding who we are and what we do and then spends 288 pages explaining how it can be achieved.

The first insight by Little is that there are three sources of our personality traits:
1. Biogenic referring to the aspects of our personality sourced genetically. (50%)
2. Sociogenic, those aspects learned from social and cultural factors (25%), and
3. Idojenic, referring to the aspects of our personality best accounted for by (idiosyncratic) individual factors such as personal values, goals, projects and commitments. (25%)

Personally I think the London Twins study makes the percentages more like 66%-17%-17% but it still is a very useful model.

With regard to Biogenic factors Little begins by dumping on Myers-Briggs saying the test lacks both reliability and validity. In addition he makes the point that it is not Type that counts in personality but traits. I must confess as someone who regards MBTI as a waste of time I enjoyed this section. Instead Little recommends the reader adopt the Big Five model. The five-factor model (FFM) indentifies 5 core traits:
1. openness to creativity
2. conscientiousness
3. extraversion
4. agreeableness
5. neuroticism

OCEAN is often used as a mnemonic to remember the traits. Each trait is distributed normally in the population. In other words 67% of the population fall within plus or minus 1 standard devation and have an average level of the trait. So one sixth of the population would be classified as Extravert, one sixth as Introverts, and two-thirds as Ambiverts. The MBTI say you are either an Extravert or Introvert.

Personally I prefer the Humm-Wadsworth with its seven factors to the FFM; however the five most common factors in the Humm are identical to the FFM.

Little then goes on to both list a number of secondary factors and provide for each factor a simple questionnaire. Unfortunately he then slips into the same error as the MBTI by saying you are at one end of the spectrum or the other. For example Self Monitoring refers to the individual's trait sensitivity and responsiveness to social factors. High Self Monitors are highly responsive to needs and perspectives of others and are apt to avoid conflict at all costs. Low Self Monitors stick to their own beliefs and attitudes which can make them unconscious and boorish but they are not afraid of healthy conflict. The reality is that two-thirds of us are clustered around the mean.

Similarly with locus of control which refers to the extent to which individuals believe are in control of the events affecting them. A person’s locus is either internal (the person believes they are primarily in control of their life course) or external (meaning they believe their life course is primarily controlled by external factors which they cannot influence). Again two-thirds of us cluster around the mean.

However the part of the book I found really illuminating is when Little described the idojenic contribution to our behaviour. Little uses himself as an example. He describes as an introvert who when he is lecturing projects himself as an pseudo=extrovert. I myself have had the same experience. People are often surprised to hear according to the MBTI that I am an introvert. But I am. I have simply adapted my personality to meet the demands of the situation. People do behave "out of character" or counter to their typical disposition.

Little makes great play about how important it is for your own happiness to be doing projects that are congruent with your genetic traits. According to Little most of us have up to 15 projects on the go. He refers to a website 43.com which had been operating since 2005 and collects list of projects from people. Top of the list is losing weight followed by going to write a book. Unfortunately for Little the website closed down in March 2015. Nevertheless his book is first class and well worth purchasing.

Productive and Perceptive

I branched out in reading this book. I recently joined the productive readers of the world and have been striving to find wisdom and well-being through opening my eyes to the ideas out there.

Admittedly, on a couple occasions I found myself a bit lost. My mind wanders as it does to so many of us. However, many ideas I found here were intriguing and just rang true in my mind. They made sense.

Little is a very sharp man than has really refined his thoughts. A few of my favorite ideas of his include the following:

1) We have specific self-beliefs and constructs of ourselves and they inevitably affect our well-being. Acknowledging this, Little states that "it is possible to change our personal constructs, and this gives us hope." But with this he includes that " sometimes escaping from them can be difficult."

2) High vs Low Self Monitoring

3) Seeking to see deeper than the frames people put on at first meeting. In other words, giving others a chance to show their strengths or not being fooled by an impressive manner.

4) Hostility and how it affects the Type A's of the world.

5) The power of "latent inhibition" and its upsides.

Miss This Series And You'll Be Sorry!

This is part of a multi-author, multi-story, series of books ("Daughter's of Darkness"). It sounds confusing, (it's not really) but I promise the storyline is worth the effort of reading. The Devil has Four Daughters that are not aware they have sisters until he puts a bounty on their heads. While it's no surprise that it's all about a power hungry demon, the surprise is that each author writes about one individual daughter's perspective AND IT WORKS! Deviant is Jezebel's Book 2. Kristen Middleton gives you a kick-butt Heroine that is just beginning to discover herself by discovering an important part of her life has been hidden from her. This is a fast read with lots of action and emotion.

I highly recommend this read and the series. W.J. May (Victoria), Chrissy Peebles (Blair) and C.J. Pinard (Lotus) round out the other sisters.

Love Jezebel's fire. Can't wait to read more about the daughters of darkness. Will all sisters ever meet up and take Vlad out? Just wish there was a way I could stay up to date with all the authors about this series. Can't wait for the next book about Jezebel.
