Moving and deeply poignant - draws you in and you are there.

An amazing reflection of Jamaican life in the 50's. Historically accurate, moving and deeply poignant. Excellent description of life in England and the racism that West Indians encountered. Fantastic writing, the story draws you and and makes you feel as though you are really there. Need more novels like this that is a true reflection of what West Indians encountered in England in the 50's. My favorite character is the grandmother Auntie, she is so true of what happened to many West Indian children who were left in the care of their grandparents.

wonderful

This is a top-notch book, and follows a man who has to remove himself and his family from Jamaica after his greedy family turns against him and wrests his land away from him. He goes to England, eventually bringing his wife, and then his children, over, for a better life.

America is not the only country where immigrants experienced disillusionment. Clifford believes that England will treat him better than his family has, only to be given a rude awakening as he has to deal with racists who, like ignorant Americans, wrongfully blame immigrants for their woes.

I really liked the author's style. As I'm unfamiliar with Jamaican terms and some British slang, I am grateful that the author added a word guide at the back of the book so I could look up any words that confused me. Some of the dialogue could be a bit hard to follow, but that's not the author's fault, as she nicely captured the feeling of patwa, and hen the dialogue reflects how people actually speak in that time and area, it makes the story feel more real.

Overall a really good book with a ending that in some parts, I did not expect. I only wish we could have learned more of what happened to Cliff's extended family, but honestly, that's just a quibble. This book is definitely work checking out. A+.

Vivid and powerful story
By Mrs S.
Brilliantly written. Vivid and enchanting description of the Jamaican landscape and people.
This book shows the hardships of one family as they try to eek a living from their small holding, driven off their land the main character tries to provide for his family but soon finds the task daunting and looks to England to rescue him from financial hardship.
He soon finds he has jumped out of the pot into the fire.
This is a book that captures what so many West Indian families went through, post WWII. England, the motherland offered opportunity, but with it came the harsh realities of racism and adapting to a foreign country.
BMJ Gatt captures the Jamaican patois perfectly as well as the humor and feistiness of the people. From Clifford, the sober, hardworking father, to Tilda and her struggle to survive after being left behind in Jamaica.
We need more novels like this, it captures my Jamaican heritage perfectly and makes me proud to come from such a courageous nation.
